Gustavsfors: Industrial Heritage on the Knoälven
Accommodation in Gustavsfors
Gustavsfors brings together traces of industrial history, water activities and a rural landscape. This gives you two main themes to consider when planning your stay: the development of the former industrial community and time by the river, at a swimming spot or in a canoe. Which one you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in cultural history or outdoor and water activities.
Industrial history and surviving traces
In 1746, Uddeholmsbolaget established a hammer mill on the Knoälven, marking the beginning of the industrial community of Gustafsfors. The Gustavsfors Hembygdsgård is next to the old ironworks and connects the local history with a specific place. The blast furnace ruins are also among the most distinctive traces of the industry: they are protected under Sweden’s Cultural Heritage Act.
There has been a mill in Gustavsfors since the works were established. The surviving mill building was probably built sometime in the 19th century. The history of the mill and the likely construction date of the surviving building therefore belong to different periods. The mill is the last surviving building from the industrial era on the Knoälven. The Gustavsfors Bruksmuseum traces the history of the industrial community from the ironworks to the paper mill.
Celebrations at the Hembygdsgård
An annual Walpurgis Night celebration is held at the Gustavsfors Hembygdsgård; dates may vary. A traditional Midsummer celebration is also held there. If you would like to plan your stay around either event, check the exact dates in advance. Tunnbröd is also sold at the Hembygdsgård.
Swimming, canoeing and the river landscape
At Risfallet by Uppämten, there is a municipal swimming spot run by Hagfors Municipality, offering peaceful swimming in a rural setting. The Gustavsfors family canoe trip is suitable for beginners and families with children. The two activities offer different experiences: peaceful swimming at the bathing spot or travelling by canoe.
Around Gustavsfors, the Knoälven flows mostly through woodland; agricultural land lies right by the bridge and at Uppämten. The Helgeån flows through the Gustavsfors Fiskevårdsområde; around 20 fish species are found in the river. In the wider area south and east of Gustavsfors, otters were established in the water systems by the end of the 2002–2013 survey period. The two rivers offer different connections with nature: woodland along the Knoälven and around 20 fish species in the Helgeån.
