Accommodation in Nordmarkshyttan
Nordmarkshyttan combines a long mining history with traces of industry, church and nature. This offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: you may be interested in the development of the ironworks, the surviving technical remains, or the marshland and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Nordmarkshyttan, this thematic selection can help you decide what kind of trip you would like.
Mining History and Cultural Heritage
Nordmarkshyttan was one of two ironworks built as early as the Middle Ages to process ore into pig iron; the other was Haborshyttan. Operations in Nordmarkshyttan continued until 1905. The medieval process of turning ore into pig iron represents a different part of the history from the later extraction facilities.
The Nordmark-Taberg area is designated as a cultural environment of national cultural-historical interest under the designation K 12. An unusually large number of mining remains, facilities and buildings associated with the industry have been preserved around Nordmarks kyrka. Here, the connection between the workplace and the settlement is particularly clear. Nordmarks kyrka was inaugurated in 1731. Alongside the industrial history, the church offers its own historical point of interest.
The Nordmarks Gruv- och Mineralmuseum comprises 12 buildings on a 10,000 m² site near Nordmarks kyrka. The number of buildings and the size of the site give the complex a concrete scale within the local mining history.
Several technical remains illustrate different aspects of mining. The water-powered Djurhagsspelet was in operation until the 1910s and was used to extract rock from Kogruvan. The current headframe at Gubbortsschakt took on its appearance around 1930. A diesel locomotive by Insel has been preserved in Gubbortslaven. Together, these examples represent water power, hoisting technology and locomotive technology. While ironworks operations ended in 1905, the current headframe did not take on its appearance until around 1930.
Nature and Cycling Routes
Nordmarksmyrarna is a complex of mires, swamp forests and various types of fens and wetlands. The Nordmarksälven flows through the northern part of the nature reserve, and sport fishing is possible in the river. Thus, in addition to cultural-historical sites, the trip can include wetlands and a specific fishing opportunity.
The Filipstad–Motjärnshyttan cycle route is 29 kilometres long and suitable for the whole family. It follows the former railway embankment of the NKLJ, the NordmarkKlarälvens Järnvägar. A municipal cycling project also prepared the old NKLJ/ÖWJ railway embankment from Abborrtjärn in Filipstad to Nordmarks station for walking and cycling. Different details matter when choosing a route: the Cykelbanan is described in terms of its length and suitability for families, while the municipal project focuses on the railway embankment section and its preparation for walking and cycling.
