If you choose Gunnarskog as a travel destination, you can focus on cultural history, cycling and hiking, or a swimming spot by the lake. Today’s Gunnarskogs kyrka, two combined trails, and Gravåsöna on Lake Gunnern offer different points of interest. It is therefore helpful to consider the area’s features separately when planning your trip: at the church, the construction date and furnishings are the main focus; on the trails, the route and named landmarks; and at the lake, a municipal outdoor bathing area.

Church, history, and views

Today’s Gunnarskogs kyrka was completed in 1727. Three of its furnishings bear later, clearly distinct dates: Isac Schulström created the pulpit in 1738, the altarpiece in 1739, and the gallery front between 1757 and 1760. The pulpit and altarpiece therefore date from consecutive years, while the gallery front belongs to a later period. The interior style is described as “bondbarock.” If you are interested in church architecture or works of art, you can distinguish between the church’s completion, the dates of two works created close together in time, and the later-dated gallery front.

Gunnarskogs kyrkogård also has a distinct connection to the landscape: the cemetery is situated high up and offers views of Lake Gunnern to the south and southwest. Its location and viewing direction give it a different character from the church’s dated furnishings; here, the focus is not on the building’s history, but on the view across the lake.

Cycling and hiking trails

Södra Gunnarskogsleden is a combined cycling and hiking trail approximately 23 km long. It starts at Larstomta in Gunnarskog and passes Gunnarskogs Hembygdsgård and the Ryggestadbergets utsiktstorn observation tower. There are several useful points of reference for planning: the approximate length gives you an idea of the route, Larstomta marks the starting point, and the other two landmarks lie along the trail. The Hembygdsgård and observation tower are different types of landmarks, so the route can be understood both in terms of its length and the places along the way.

Norra Gunnarskogsleden is also a combined hiking and cycling trail; Lafallhöjden, a high-lying Finn farmstead, is located along it. By comparison, the southern trail is defined by an approximate length and several named landmarks, while the northern trail features Lafallhöjden, a high-lying place along the route. Both trails are designated for cycling and hiking, but they differ in the specific reference points available for planning your trip.

Lake Gunnern and nature

Gravåsöna is a municipal outdoor bathing area on Lake Gunnern in Gunnarskog. This is a specific place by the water, offering a different perspective for travelers interested in swimming than the combined cycling routes. The forests of Gunnarskog are also home to abundant wildlife and a wide variety of species. For nature lovers, the forests add another point of interest alongside the named bathing spot: at Gravåsöna, the focus is on the lakeside location; in the forests, on the wildlife and variety of species.
