Almunge: Church Art, Hiking Trails and Swimming Spots
Accommodation in Almunge
Almunge offers several different points of interest for planning a trip: its village layout, church art, hiking stages and swimming facilities. The differences between the options can help with your choices: for the hiking trails, the focus is on the route and character of each stage; for swimming, it is on facilities, access and pool size.
Village Layout and Church Art
Almunge consists of a station settlement in the west and a church village in the east. This layout marks two clearly distinct areas. Almunge kyrka is on Road 282, opposite Almunge’s health centre and school. The church has wall and vault paintings by Albertus Pictor and his workshop. The road location provides a specific reference point for getting around, while the paintings add a cultural and historical dimension. They are attributed to Albertus Pictor and his workshop.
Hiking Trails Through the Cultural Landscape
Almunge is surrounded by a cultural landscape with high natural and cultural value. Two stages of the Upplandsleden provide specific options for planning a hike. The fourth stage runs between Länna and Almunge; along the way, there is a wind shelter and a fire pit at Långsjön. The fifth stage runs from Almunge to Södersjön and is a short, easy hike. The stages offer a clear choice: the fourth is defined by its route and the facilities at Långsjön, while the fifth is characterised by its short, easy-to-hike nature.
Swimming Spots and Indoor Pool
Södersjöbadet is located at Södersjön in Almunge and is an easily accessible swimming spot. Its facilities include a large lawn, a jetty, a swimming pontoon, an accessible bathing ramp, changing rooms and a toilet. Södersjöbadet is served by bus 809; from the nearest stop, Rånäs vägskäl (Almunge), it is about a 1.5 km walk to the swimming spot. The roughly 1.5 km walk is therefore a distinct part of planning the journey. Södersjöns badplats has a dry toilet and a picnic table.
The pool at Almunge sim- och sporthall measures 12 × 5.5 metres; its depth ranges from 70 to 170 centimetres. The depth range is one metre. The length and width, and the depth range, describe three different dimensions of the same pool. Different factors matter when choosing between the swimming options: at Södersjöbadet, the outdoor facilities and the journey by bus and on foot are key; at the indoor pool, it is the pool’s dimensions and depth.
Railway Heritage in Uppland
In Uppland, Lennakatten is a 33 km-long narrow-gauge heritage railway. If you are interested in railways as well as church art and hiking trails, you can explore this topic separately from the local places and routes. Narrow gauge means a track gauge narrower than standard gauge.
