The character of the surroundings is shaped above all by the variety of trails and destinations available for a stay in Bålsta. Bålstaåsen, a large forest area, is right by the railway station. There are also circular routes of various lengths and sections of Upplandsleden. Cycling, paddling and cultural sites add to the choice. For planning, route length, trail layout and landscape are useful points of comparison.

Circular Routes, Forest and Upplandsleden

On Bålstaåsen, Blå stigen starts and ends at an information board just north of the scout hut at Ullevivägen 74. The route is on Bålstaåsen near the railway station. Its start and end point are therefore clearly specified, while the forest area itself is right by Bålsta railway station.

Hälsans stig is an approximately four-kilometre circular route in Bålsta. It passes the railway station area, the town centre, Medborgarhuset and Upplandsleden. Its connections to these local landmarks set it apart from trails that run more through forests and open countryside.

At approximately 4.5 kilometres, Björnbroslingan is slightly longer and loops around Skörby. Gravel paths through open farmland alternate with winding forest trails. The route passes the Balders hage wetland; it also has several benches and two barbecue areas. The changing landscape is therefore combined with specific places to stop and rest.

A shorter circular route is the 1.2-kilometre Lillsjöslingan. Marked in blue, it loops around Lillsjön and runs mostly along natural forest trails. Compared with the circular routes of approximately four and 4.5 kilometres, it is much more compact; the markings also provide clear guidance along the trail.

The sections of Upplandsleden also vary in length and destination. The orange-marked section between Bålsta and Skokloster is approximately 20 kilometres long. From the ridges, there are views of the bays of Lake Mälaren and across an expansive agricultural landscape. The section between Bålsta and Ekilla Nature Reserve is approximately five kilometres long, starting at Bålsta railway station and ending at the nature reserve. This gives you the choice of a longer section to Skokloster or a shorter route to Ekilla Nature Reserve.

Culture and Other Activities

The Åbergs Museum in Bålsta is housed in a renovated 19th-century barn. It features a three-storey Trazankoja with a slide, a suspension bridge and Hemliga Arnes laboratory. The barn and these distinctive features give the museum a clear profile. Another cultural landmark is Lilla Hagalund, an important cultural heritage site in Bålsta.

Bålsta aktivitetspark is in the town centre, between Fridegårdsgymnasiet and the ice rink. It is designed as a recreational space for casual sports and play. The park is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, with the exception of the skate park. This restriction applies to the skate park and should be taken into account when choosing an area.

For a cycling trip, Cykelleden Uppland runs between Resecentrum in Bålsta and Ekillabadet on cycle paths without car traffic. Kalmarsand in Bålsta is a good starting point for paddling. Cycling and paddling therefore complement the circular routes described above, offering further ways to choose how to explore the area.
