In Nykvarn, you’ll find lakeside hiking trails, a longer paddling route, seasonal winter activities and tangible traces of industrial history. The routes vary in length and course; when it comes to skiing, snow and frost conditions are decisive. If you’re planning a stay, you can tailor your excursions to the topics that interest you.

Hiking trails and landscapes

The Turingeleden is 3.8 kilometres long and runs along the southern shore of Lake Turingen in Nykvarn. The Hälsans stig is also in Nykvarn and is about 7 kilometres long. These lengths give you a direct comparison of the two routes, without implying a walking time or a particular level of difficulty. The connecting section of the Sörmlandsleden begins approximately 100 metres west of Nykvarn railway station.

The landscape can also be described through specific places: Jägarskogen Nature Reserve is on the northern shore of Lake Yngern and not far from the built-up area of Nykvarn. Vackstaskogen is on the outskirts of Nykvarn. Lake Vällingen lies to the south, and Långsjön to the north. These details help distinguish the different locations without connecting the trails to one another.

At Folkets park on Gammeltorpsvägen, there is a car park with 10 spaces, located 600 metres from Nykvarn railway station. Local parking regulations may change, so check them before you arrive.

Paddling, cycling and winter activities

The 27-kilometre Åkers Styckebruk–Nykvarn canoe route begins in Åkers Bergslag in Strängnäs Municipality and passes through Visnaren, the Marviken lakes, Klämmingen, Stora and Lilla Kvarnsjön, and Gullsmorasjön before reaching Lake Yngern. The route is easy to paddle and includes seven portages, the longest of which is 700 metres. This means the total distance and the individual portages can be treated as separate planning considerations.

For a cycling trip from central Nykvarn to Taxinge Castle and back, the distance via the suggested detour is approximately 28 kilometres. The suggested road option may change, so check the route before setting off. Nykvarn is accessible by car via the E4 and E20.

On Alcrofältet, trail lengths vary between 3 and 8 kilometres depending on snow conditions. The illuminated Elljusspår is 4.5 kilometres long and partly hilly. Skiing depends on snow and frost conditions. At Hökmossbadet, there is a winter jetty for cold-water swimming with a device to protect the hole in the ice; this is a seasonal offering. Lådbilslandet includes the Jordbrukslandet area, with miniature tractors and agricultural machinery.

Churches and local history

Turinge Church reflects several historical periods: its oldest section dates from the 12th century. In the entrance hall is an 11th-century runestone with one of the longest inscriptions in Södermanland. The church also includes the funerary chapel that Erik Dahlbergh designed and had built for himself and his family at the end of the 17th century. It is considered one of Sweden’s more notable Baroque monuments. Nykvarn Church is in central Nykvarn and was built in 1974. At the local heritage museum, Smedsbygget, you can learn about the historic parishes of Turinge and Taxinge.

The place name also points to the industrial past. Nykvarn takes its name from the “New Mill,” which was built at the waterfall on the Turingeån east of the present-day manor house. An ironworks for processing refined iron was also established there. Iron production at Nykvarns bruk was expanded and improved in the 17th century.

The industrial area includes mill buildings and staff housing from the new paper mill dating to the second half of the 19th century, as well as older houses from the ironmaking era. The older staff housing on Bruksgatan forms a well-preserved, cohesive group of buildings. Together, these structures represent different phases of local industrial history, from the ironworks to the later paper mill buildings.
