Botkyrka: Cultural History and Trails
Accommodation in Botkyrka
Botkyrka offers a range of cultural and landscape-related themes to help you plan your trip: the history of Botkyrka Church, the history of paper at Tumba Bruk Museum, as well as trails and nature paths. If you are planning a stay, you can distinguish between the places by cultural interest and type of route. The examples below range from a historic church to a museum and named hiking and training routes.
Cultural History in Botkyrka
The roots of Botkyrka Church date back to the 12th century. It is protected under Chapter 4 of Sweden's Cultural Heritage Act and is located in an area of national interest for heritage conservation. Historically, it became a well-known pilgrimage church. The St. Botvid Pilgrim Trail runs between Salem Church and Botkyrka Church; there are six meditation spots along the route.
There are four runestones at Botkyrka Church, each in a different location. One lies inaccessible in the floor of the weapon room. A stone with a damaged inscription stands against the southeast exterior wall; a partially visible stone lies in the ground beneath the southwest corner of the tower. Near the sacristy, a runestone fragment is built high into the north exterior wall.
In Botkyrka Municipality, the exhibitions and surroundings of Tumba Bruk Museum tell the story of Swedish banknotes and of the people who lived and worked at Tumba Paper Mill. The site includes a museum, a café, and a park. The museum offers general guided tours of the mill grounds, as well as tours of the paper workshop. Visitors can make their own paper there or explore the museum on their own; free audio guides are available to download.
Mångkulturellt centrum offers exhibitions, lectures, a library, and an open workshop. These provide additional cultural themes alongside the histories of the church and paper. When planning your visit, it is worth considering each offering as a distinct focus rather than treating them as a single type of visit.
Trails and Routes in Different Formats
The St. Botvid Pilgrim Trail connects Salem Church with Botkyrka Church. The six meditation spots along the route add another link to the church's pilgrimage history. By contrast, Aspen Nature Trail is a hiking route a little over seven kilometres long, circling the southern part of Lake Aspen.
Lida has a total of 35 kilometres of training trails, as well as three mountain bike trails for exploring trail riding. These figures represent different planning scales: Aspen Nature Trail is a single hiking route, while the 35 kilometres refers to the training trails as a whole. This lets you compare a named trail by the lake with the overall offering of training trails; the mountain bike trails are another specific option there.
In northern Botkyrka, three cultural trails with signs provide information about local cultural landscapes in Norsborg, Hallunda, and Fittja. Near Hågelby-Skrävsta, there are two signposted walking routes: Skrävstastigen and Saltbergstigen. The landscape there is largely intact, preserving archaeological sites and agricultural land.
History, Cultural Landscapes, and Wildlife
Hågelby gård, by Lake Aspen in Botkyrka, was built between 1911 and 1922 by Lars Magnus Ericsson, founder of Ericsson. This time period and historical attribution give the site a distinct connection to Botkyrka's history.
Hågelby 4H Farm is a small farm close to the city, with horses, sheep, goats, miniature pigs, chickens, rabbits, cats, and other small animals. Visitors can take part in courses and camps. If you are interested in animals, the farm and its animals are the main focus here; the walking routes at Hågelby-Skrävsta, by contrast, are about trails and a preserved cultural landscape.
You can therefore sort the different themes according to your interests: church and museum history, a specific hiking route, training or mountain bike trails, as well as rural cultural landscapes and animals. The specific names and route details offer different starting points for planning your trip without equating the places or activities.
