Accommodation in Högsjö
A little advance planning can help you decide whether culture, a walk, fishing, or winter sports will shape your trip.
Cultural history in Högsjö
The Högsjö Bruksmuseum is housed in the White School, a building dating from 1785. Högsjö is also home to an ironworks dating from the 17th century. Its defining features include a blast furnace ruin, forges, stone-lined waterways, and older industrial buildings, including a wool mill and a machine felt factory. The self-guided tour “Kulturbyggnader i Högsjö” uses a map to guide visitors to cultural buildings from the ironworks era and is designed for independent visits.
Another historical point of interest is the Fatabur at Högsjö herrgård. It is one of the few surviving examples in Sweden and is documented as early as the 17th century; its year of construction is unknown. The privately run Högsjö Gård chapel also dates back to the 18th century.
Paths and exercise
The illuminated running track in Högsjö is 2.5 kilometres long and takes about 40 minutes to walk. Longer, unilluminated routes of 4 and 6 kilometres are available beyond it. The options therefore differ both in length and lighting. Municipal information about recreational facilities may change; check route information before setting out.
A 1.2-kilometre walking path runs along the shore of Lake Grävsjön, with benches, barbecue areas, and a wind shelter. These facilities are maintained locally; check their condition before your visit. The “Grävsjön runt” hiking loop is a separate route: it follows the lakeshore and continues through the village of Högsjö and its industrial area. There are four barbecue areas and a wind shelter along the loop; jetties can be used for fishing or swimming. The two lakeside routes offer different things: the walking path has a set length and places to rest, while Grävsjön runt is a loop through the village and industrial area.
Seasonal activities by the water
When there is natural snow, Högsjö has two cross-country ski trails: one is 5 kilometres long and the other 7.5 kilometres. Both connect with the illuminated running track. The trails depend on natural snow cover, which is therefore an important factor when planning a winter trip.
Högsjöbadet is a bathing spot on Lake Grävsjön, with a beach, bathing jetties, and a playground. A kiosk and restaurant are 500 metres away. Facilities and nearby services may vary seasonally, so it is worth checking current conditions. The lakes Grävsjön, Kullasjön, and Ölången around Högsjö share a common fishing right. Check which fishing permits apply before setting out. Fishing in Lake Högsjön is permitted only in winter; confirm this seasonal rule before your trip as well.
Planning visits
Thorslundkagge offers guided tours of the cooperage and Ekliggarnas Sal. A booking is required to visit. This differs from the self-guided tour of the cultural buildings, which uses a map. If you include cultural stops in your travel plans, you can choose between a booked guided tour and an independent walk.
