Discover Strängnäs: Culture, History and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Strängnäs
Strängnäs offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: architectural history, walks and seasonal activities. The cathedral and historic buildings provide concrete focal points for cultural activities, while guided and self-guided walks offer further options. In summer, guided tours and activities on the water are also available. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your travel dates according to whether historic sites, walks or seasonal activities matter most to you.
Cultural history spanning different periods
Strängnäs Cathedral dates back to the 13th century. Roggeborgen, a medieval residence, is located right next to it. Two different types of buildings stand side by side as cultural and historical points of interest: the cathedral and the residence.
The Roggebiblioteket holds around 70,000 volumes. Its collections include rare early printed books and medieval letters. You must book in advance to visit the Roggebiblioteket. Keep this requirement in mind when planning your stay around a visit to the library.
Grassagården is one of the few burghers' farmsteads in Sweden to have been preserved at its original site. The oldest building dates from the early 17th century. The site can therefore be described both in terms of its preservation at its original location and the age of its oldest building. Guided tours of Grassagården are offered in summer.
Strängnäs's present-day windmill marks another point in time: it is a Dutch-style mill built in 1855. During the summer months, guided tours of the mill are offered by tourist guides. If you plan to take one of these tours, check the dates for your travel period.
Explore Strängnäs on foot
Lillgatan is Strängnäs's oldest street. Its cobblestones and flat stone slabs for pedestrians give it distinctive architectural features. The street can therefore be described not only by its age but also by its design.
For walks, you can choose between guided options and exploring on your own: visitors can join guided walks or explore Strängnäs independently with a map. The Strängnäs Greeters offer free, personal tours of local neighbourhoods. The tours are open to everyone, and groups should consist of one to six people.
Långberget is another option for spending time on foot: the area is a recreational area with walking trails. The options therefore include both walks through the town and routes in an area specifically described as a recreational area.
Summer activities on the water
Canoes, kayaks and SUP boards can be rented at Strängnäs guest harbour during the summer season. If you want to take advantage of one of these options, the season is relevant to your planning; check the dates for your travel period.
Västerviken is Strängnäs's small-craft harbour and a meeting place in town during the summer. Together with the seasonal rental options at the guest harbour, it offers another potential focus for your stay: activities on the water, which are explicitly associated with summer.
There is a practical difference to consider when planning: several guided tours and rentals at the guest harbour are associated with summer, while visits to the Roggebiblioteket require advance booking. Check the dates for summer activities and book your library visit in advance if these activities are part of your stay.
