Stigtomta: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Stigtomta
Stigtomta offers several points to consider when planning your trip: nature in the Bärstakärret and Trollskogen nature reserves, church art in Stigtomta Church, as well as historic buildings, collections and sports. If you are looking for a hotel in Stigtomta, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Nature Between Moor and Forest
Bärstakärret Nature Reserve lies on the southeastern bay of Lake Yngaren. Its formation is linked to the lowering of the lake in the 1860s: calcareous spring water created a limestone fen of particular botanical interest. Several rare species are found here, including the orchids Myggnycklar and Grönkulla.
Trollskogen Nature Reserve lies right by Stigtomta and features old, natural coniferous and deciduous forest. Well-trodden paths crisscross the species-rich woodland. Many of the pines host the wood-decaying fungus Tallticka. Cultural and historical traces include the remains of old charcoal kilns and a stone setting believed to date from the Early Iron Age.
The two nature reserves are distinctly different: Bärstakärret is known for the formation of a limestone fen and its rare orchids, while Trollskogen offers woodland paths, Tallticka and historical traces. This lets you choose between wetland and forest as two different nature experiences.
Road 52 is the easiest route to Trollskogen; it runs directly through Stigtomta. The road also passes through open Sörmland countryside, with farm shops, studios, cafés, restaurants, bathing spots and accommodation.
Art and Historical Traces
Stigtomta Church brings together two distinct cultural and historical points of interest. Its altarpiece was painted by Pehr Hörberg in 1812 and depicts the washing of the feet. The pulpit originally belonged to the church of the Svea Artillery Regiment in Stockholm. The altarpiece links an artist, a date and a subject; the pulpit has its own story of origin in Stockholm.
Tiondeboden at the vicarage in Stigtomta is considered the oldest surviving building and mainly displays agricultural implements. The museum in Klockarbol contains old artefacts and archival material from the four parishes of Bärbo, Halla, Nykyrka and Stigtomta. A single historic house and a collection from four parishes offer different perspectives: one is a building with agricultural implements, the other, old artefacts and archival material.
The history of aviation is another subject commemorated here. A memorial sign marks the site of the former Stigtomta hangar. At Goglunda GĂĄrd, an information sign points out the former optical flight guidance beam in Stigtomta.
Sports and Trip Planning
Sports enthusiasts can choose from two types of events: the Stigtomtaloppet race has been held since 2012. The Stigtomtakavlen is an annual orienteering relay held in April, with classes for elite competitors, young people and recreational athletes. You can join a training session with OK Hällen and try orienteering. If an event is a key reason for your trip, check the exact date in advance.
