Trelleborg offers visitors a variety of highlights: a reconstructed ring fortress, local history and art sit alongside festivals and trails through coastal landscapes. A quarter of the Trelleborgen ring fortress has been reconstructed at its exact original location. Trelleborg Museum, an art and cultural history museum, is located at Stortorget in the town centre. The town centre is easy to explore on foot; a pedestrian zone offers shops, restaurants and outdoor dining.

Cultural History in Trelleborg

The oldest parts of Trelleborg lie around Gamla Torget. The church, monastery and marketplace once formed the town centre there. Bryggaregatan is one of Sweden’s oldest streets and follows the same route as the 7th-century road that led from the coast to the large trading centre of Uppåkra. Sandmöllan is Trelleborg’s only surviving windmill. It is a post mill dating from the 17th century.

Axel Ebbes Konsthall is a functionalist building from 1935. The art gallery houses Axel Ebbe’s collected works, including sculptures, prints and poems. Another historic landmark is Jättegraven in the Dalköpingeån Nature Reserve: the prehistoric monument dates from around 4000 BC, is 64 metres long and 7 metres wide, and is considered the largest structure of its kind in Sweden.

Festivals and Seasonal Experiences

The Viking event Slaget om Trelleborgen takes place on the second weekend after Midsummer. The programme includes a Viking market, music and crafts; the exact dates may vary each year. If the festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the event dates for your travel year.

Palmfestivalen has been held on the last weekend of August since 1976, filling Trelleborg’s streets with music, rides, food and market stalls. The programme may vary from year to year. The seasonal Palmtåget is a free hop-on hop-off train that runs between Trelleborg’s attractions. As operating periods may change, check the current schedule before travelling.

The exhibition “ÖGA mot ÖGA” includes the audio experience “Spåret för nyfikna”, which is aimed at adults and children. Exhibition programmes may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.

Coastal Trails and Nature

Dalköpinge ängar, a coastal nature reserve, lies on the outskirts of Trelleborg; the Skåneleden trail runs along the coast there. From Trelleborg, you can follow the trail north across the plain or east along the coast. The two directions therefore differ mainly in their surrounding landscape. The separately marked pilgrimage route starts in the monastery garden in Trelleborg.

Outside Skåre, in Trelleborg Municipality, lies the municipal Fredshög-Stavstensudde marine reserve. Its habitats include bladderwrack forests and seagrass meadows. You may occasionally see resting seals on rocks that rise above the water. There is also an underwater nature trail east of Skåre harbour. Information boards at a depth of 1 to 2 metres provide information about the local flora and fauna.
