Hökön: Nature and Railway History
Accommodation in Hökön
Hökön is in the northern part of Osby Municipality, near the border with Kronoberg County. A municipal description dated July 3, 2025, describes Hökön as a family-friendly settlement. For orientation during your stay, the area brings together a nearby wetland landscape, railway history and occasional events throughout the year. If you are looking for a hotel in Hökön, you can use these different themes as points of reference when planning your trip.
Wetlands and Nature Observation
About 1.5 kilometres north of Hökön lies Tyringemossen, a 28-hectare nature reserve. Capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, black woodpecker, short-eared owl, Eurasian pygmy owl and Tengmalm’s owl continue to be sighted in and around the reserve. Sightings can vary by season; if you have particular species in mind, take this seasonal variation into account when planning your visit.
When choosing a nature destination, it is worth considering the different conditions: Tyringemossen itself has no hiking trails or roads that make the area easily accessible. The nearby Vakö myr nature reserve has a footbridge and viewing points at Låkan. Vakö myr can be reached via a forest track from the public road between Hökön and Fanhult; the track is about 400 metres east of the wetland. Access conditions may change, so check them before your visit.
Railway and School History
The SOEJ railway line (Sölvesborg–Olofström–Elmhults järnväg) opened in 1901, and a station was built in Hökön. Hökön’s station, dating from the 1910s, has been preserved. Opposite the station stands a wooden house from around the turn of the century, formerly used as a shop. These examples illustrate different periods and former functions in the history of the settlement.
The SOEJ line is still used for freight traffic. If you are using this information to plan a current trip, check the operating status in advance. The school’s history also spans a clearly defined period: as part of “Boken om Hököns skola” (“The Book About Hökön School”), a working group documented the school’s activities from 1921 to 1973.
A quiz walk with questions for adults and children was also held at Hökön School. The first gathering under the title “Social Gemenskap” (“Social Community”) was held there too and included a talk by Reymond Olsson. Olsson has run his own apiary for many years and has extensive knowledge of beekeeping and the important role bees play in nature.
Events Throughout the Year
Hökön’s market and flea market takes place every year, usually on the first Sunday in July. Check the exact date for the relevant year if you want to plan your trip around it. The summer fair and flea market announced for 2026 included coffee and waffles, as well as hot dogs in buns; check the offerings again for future events.
