Hiking and nature around Åsljunga
Route 12, Lärkesholm–Bjärabygget, passes a cliff on the edge of Åsljunga. Water constantly seeps over the rock, where unusual lichens thrive. A path also leads from the cliff near Åsljunga up to a viewpoint and the exercise trail at Åsljungagården. If you’re particularly interested in natural features, the cliff provides a specific landmark; the path uphill connects it with the viewpoint and exercise trail.
The Åsljungasjön runt circular trail is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes to walk. It is adapted for accessibility; eight cultural pillars along the route provide information about local culture. At 4.5 kilometres, the loop is shorter than the 17-kilometre Skåneleden section 12a. This makes it easy to compare the two options by distance, while the approximate 60-minute walking time gives you an idea of how long the loop takes.
Section 12a, Lärkesholm–Grytåsa, can be started in Åsljunga at the Landshövdingevägen bus stop. Regional bus route 521 to Markaryd stops there; from the stop, it is about 300 metres to a hiking trail. As bus services may change, check the current timetable for route 521 before setting out. This gives you both a named starting point for the section and a specific stop for your journey there.
The Åsljungasjöns badplats bathing spot is located near the destination. It has a diving tower, a bathing jetty and changing facilities. This adds an opportunity to spend time by the water to the hiking options; you can include the bathing spot’s facilities as a separate item in your trip plans.
Culture and local history
Åsljunga Småkyrka was inaugurated in 1962 by Bishop Martin Lindström. The church’s altar, altar rail, pulpit, baptismal font and pew ends are carved from wood. Local woodcarvers Gert Lind and “Pelle” Lind made these pieces to designs by Ingvar Eknor. The church’s history therefore includes not only the year of its inauguration but also specific details about the craftsmen and the design of the wooden furnishings.
Another trace of the past can be found along the old village road, Landshövdingevägen, where several farmhouses from the 19th century have been preserved. In the early 20th century, Åsljunga developed into a holiday and tourist destination thanks to the railway. These two time periods offer different insights into the town’s history: the farmhouses reflect its 19th-century architectural heritage, while its development as a tourist destination reflects Åsljunga’s role in the early 20th century.
