When looking for a hotel on Ivö, you can choose your destination based on two special highlights: its geological landscape and the island’s history. Notable features include the hill Ivö Klack, the caves of Ugnsmunnarna, a Romanesque church and the surviving cellar of a bishop’s palace. Ivö thus offers several specific points of interest to help you organise your travel around your interests.

Geology and Nature on Ivö

Ivö Klack is a hill made of crystalline bedrock that rises 134 metres above sea level. Another geological feature is the Ugnsmunnarna caves, which were eroded out of limestone cliffs near the shore of Lake Ivösjön. The two sites thus represent different forms of landscape on Ivö: a hill of crystalline bedrock and caves in limestone.

Ugnsmunnarna is also a nature reserve of particular interest for its natural environment. At least 40 Red List species of fungi have been recorded there. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the geological formations of the caves and the biodiversity noted in the protected area. Nature here cannot be reduced to a single attraction: rock formations and rare fungi offer different subjects to explore on Ivö.

The Church and the Bishop’s History

S:ta Ursula kyrka on Ivö was probably built between 1224 and 1228 by Archbishop Andreas Sunesson in the Romanesque style. The chancel wall features murals that are believed to date from the 14th century. They depict S:ta Ursula and S:ta Katarina. The dates are therefore different: the church was probably built in the 13th century, while the paintings are likely a later testament to the church’s history.

Another historic structure is Biskopskällaren, the surviving cellar of a bishop’s palace built on Ivö in the 1220s by Anders Sunesen, Archbishop of Lund. The church and cellar thus point to two different aspects of the island’s history: Romanesque church architecture and a bishop’s palace, of which the cellar survives. Ursulas källa is another name associated with S:ta Ursula. The spring is described as a sacrificial spring; another recorded name is Ursule killa.

Ivö Klack also has an open-air museum where visitors can learn about the geology of the surrounding area. It adds an opportunity to explore how the landscape was formed to the nature-related attractions. If you are interested in Ivö’s geology as well as its architectural history, this site brings both interests together.

Getting There and Other Activities

The Ivöleden car ferry connects Barum with Ivön on Lake Ivösjön, northwest of Bromölla in Skåne. The crossing is 700 metres long and takes about seven minutes. You can use this approximate duration as a guide when planning your journey. Check the latest ferry service information before setting off.

Ivögården Mat & Vingård offers a walk among the vines and goats. Seasonal availability may change. Canoes, kayaks and bicycles are also available to rent there; their availability may also vary by season. The range of activities described on Ivö thus extends from church and architectural history to geology and outdoor pursuits.

When looking for a hotel on Ivö, you can first decide which aspect of your trip matters most: the church and Biskopskällaren, nature at Ugnsmunnarna or the activities at Ivögården. This gives your search a clear direction without requiring you to fit every attraction into a single itinerary.
