Discover Hörby: markets, local history and trails
Accommodation in Hörby
Hörby lies in the Ringsjö area, in a transitional landscape between forest and plain. When planning a stay, the town offers several specific points of interest: recurring cultural events, traces of its former farming village, as well as trails and cycling. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hörby, you can consider your travel dates alongside your planned activities. The main difference between these themes is whether you want to focus on a set event date, a tour through local history or outdoor activity.
Market in July, Culture Festival in May
The Hörby Market is held every year on the first Wednesday and Thursday in July and has taken place for over 270 consecutive years. More than 400 vendors, a funfair and a small-animal market are part of the festivities in the town centre. The number of vendors may vary from year to year. The date gives you a specific timeframe for planning: the market falls on the first two days of the week mentioned in July.
Every May, the Hörby Culture Festival transforms the centre of Hörby into a lively cultural stage. Singing and music, dance and art are all part of the event; local talent performs alongside national stars. The programme varies from year to year. Unlike the market, the festival takes place in May, while the market is held in July. If you want to plan your travel dates around a festival, these are two different events in the annual calendar.
Local history in the streets and on walking tours
Much of the historic townscape retains the old street layout of the former farming village, including Råbygatan and S:t Olofsgatan. A church was built on the site of Hörby in the 12th century. The street layout and the medieval church connection offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
The historic walking tour through Hörby features ten utility boxes in the town centre, decorated with older photographs from the Hörby Museum archive. Each utility box displaying a photograph has a QR code that links to four related short films. The walking tour thus combines historical images with additional stories. The cultural trail in Karnas backe also draws on stories and photographs from the Hörby Museum archive, displayed across seven information boards. Both formats use archive material, but present it in different ways: on utility boxes with QR codes or along a route with information boards.
Karnas backe also has two illuminated exercise loops, each 1,000 metres long. This stated length makes the loops a clearly defined option for physical activity, while the seven boards on the cultural trail focus on local history. Those interested in both can find a combination of local stories and exercise here, although the two offerings serve different purposes.
Cycling and hiking
The cycling and hiking link between Hörby and Ludvigsborg passes through the Fulltofta recreation area and is open to everyday cyclists, sports enthusiasts, families and visitors. It is described as a connection for cycling and hiking. The Hörby MTB Arena’s XCO course is different: it is used for mountain bike training and races. The terrain is varied and includes technical obstacles.
At the Hörby MTB Arena, technical challenges are marked with warning arrows and alternative routes. Cycling there requires an annual trail fee of 100 kronor or membership in Hörby Cykelklubb. This lets you distinguish between the options based on their purpose: a cycling and hiking link between Hörby and Ludvigsborg, or an XCO course for training and racing. For the arena, the stated fee or membership is also something to factor into your plans.
