Discover Vadstena: Castle, Abbey Church and Hotels
Accommodation in Vadstena
Vadstena combines buildings from different periods with pilgrim routes and opportunities to explore the town on foot. The castle, abbey church and largely preserved medieval street network offer different historical points of interest for your trip.
Castle, Palace and Medieval Town
Vadstena Castle was built in the 16th century by Gustav Vasa as part of Sweden’s fortification system. Its history therefore dates from a different period than the medieval townscape. The Sancta Birgitta Abbey Museum is housed in Bjälboätten Palace, a High Medieval building dating from the 1260s. It is considered the best-preserved High Medieval palace in the Nordic countries. Here, the museum collection is brought together with a building whose own history reaches far back before the era of the castle.
The town centre also offers a way to explore history: much of its medieval street network has been preserved. You can discover buildings of cultural and historical interest on a self-guided walking tour, using a web map or PDF map. This lets you focus not only on individual buildings, but also on the street layout that connects them. The castle, palace and street network represent different aspects of Vadstena’s history, without assuming they belong to the same period or have the same architectural history.
Vadstena Abbey Church was inaugurated on 16 February 1430, after approximately 60 years of construction. It is one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations and is open daily throughout the year. Check the opening information before your trip. The exact inauguration date and approximate construction period provide a specific historical context for your visit to the church.
Pilgrim Routes and Visitor Services
The Saint Birgitta Ways are pilgrim routes that lead to Vadstena. Vadstena is therefore both a destination on these routes and a place where the pilgrim tradition can be seen at the abbey church and the Pilgrims’ Centre. The Pilgrims’ Centre has a café, a shop, pilgrim information and a hostel. Visitors can receive a stamp and a Birgitta certificate there. As service information may change, it is best to check the current offerings in advance.
The Pilgrims’ Centre programme includes courses, hikes, retreats and seminars; dates vary for individual activities. If you would like to include one in your travel plans, check the relevant dates. This is a different way to engage with the pilgrim tradition than visiting the church or taking a self-guided walking tour of the town.
The Sancta Birgitta Abbey Museum also offers a special planning option for groups: guided tours can be booked throughout the year, including outside regular opening hours. Availability may change, so it is advisable to enquire in advance. This group option differs from the abbey church’s daily opening hours throughout the year; plan your visits according to their respective conditions.
Exploring on Foot and by the Water
The Borghamn–Vadstena section of the Östgötaleden trail leads from the former fishing village of Borghamn across the plain to the medieval town of Vadstena and its abbey church. In addition to this trail section, you can explore buildings of cultural and historical interest on a self-guided walking tour in Vadstena itself. The main difference between the two options is where the route takes you: across the plain to the town and its abbey church, or to buildings within Vadstena. Plan your trip using the specific route descriptions and maps.
There are several swimming spots along Vadstena’s waterfront promenade. Lake Vättern also offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking and boat trips; conditions and providers vary. You can combine the cultural and historical attractions with these activities by the water, without assuming a set order for your visits. Whether you would rather focus your days on buildings and the pilgrim tradition or on trails and activities by the lake is a helpful starting point for planning your stay in Vadstena.
