Falerum: Trails, Water and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Falerum
When looking for a hotel for a stay in Falerum, trails, landscapes and architectural history can shape your choice of destination. There are different themes to choose from when planning: circular routes, trail connections, views over Uknadalen and historic buildings. This way, you can decide whether you would rather plan your stay around a hike, the waterside landscape or cultural history.
Hiking and Trails Around Falerum
The 5.2 km Seboklint loop leads from Falerum to the summit of Mount Seboklint. The Falerum–Åtvidaberg section starts at Falerum Travel Centre. After about 1 km, it crosses the Storån; it then follows a gravel road towards Gärdserum. On the Falerum–Rumma section, you can choose in Falerum between the main trail to the Dacke Skans hillfort and the paved road towards Rumma.
Dacke Skans can be reached from Falerum via the Östgötaleden, about 600 m away. The 5.2 km refers to the length of the Seboklint loop; the roughly 600 m refers to the distance to Dacke Skans via the Östgötaleden. This makes it possible to distinguish between a loop hike with a summit as its destination and a trail to a single destination, based on their different distance figures. The Tjustleden also connects from Falerum and runs through the entire municipality of Västervik.
Water and Nature Conservation
The Storån near Falerum is protected as part of the Storån vid Falerum Natura 2000 site and lies within the Uknadalen area of national interest. On the Falerum–Åtvidaberg section, you cross the river after about one kilometre. It is therefore a specific landmark for planning your route; its protected status also provides a connection to the landscape around Falerum.
Falerum bathing area offers wide views over Uknadalen and Lake Åkervristen. The site has a bathing jetty, changing rooms, a barbecue area and an accessible dry toilet; the toilet is open in summer. Ekhultebergen Nature Reserve is about 1 km from Falerum, on the road towards Hannäs. The two places offer different options for planning: views and facilities by the water on the one hand, and a nature reserve on the other.
Industrial Heritage and Historic Buildings
Mariedal Paper Mill was founded in 1815 in the upper industrial area of Falerum. An information board in northern Falerum describes the industrial heritage of this upper industrial area. The paper mill’s founding provides a specific historical reference, while the board focuses on the industrial area as a theme.
BortgĂĄrden is on the outskirts of Falerum and is one of five protected buildings in Ă…tvidaberg Municipality. As a representative and well-preserved example, it stands for farmsteads from the 18th and 19th centuries. This adds another aspect of architectural heritage to the history of the industrial area: the farming homestead.
A strategically located hillfort stands on Dackeberget, just south of Falerum. Dacke Skans preserves the remains of an old fortification on the hill. From there, views extend over Falerum, Uknadalen and Lake Ă…kervristen. The stone arch bridge over the StorĂĄn near Falerum is classified as a Class 1B bridge. It adds a structure from transport history to the archaeological and farming heritage.
