Stora Mellösa: Church and Agricultural Landscape
Accommodation in Stora Mellösa
Stora Mellösa is in Östernärke, just south of Lake Hjälmaren. The area is shaped by agriculture, while the church, archaeological sites, and local history offer different perspectives on the place. Cycling, paddling, and seasonal produce complement its cultural attractions. If you are planning a stay, you can choose from rural history, church heritage, and outdoor activities.
Agricultural Landscape and Life by Lake Hjälmaren
The area around Stora Mellösa is a typical agricultural landscape. At one time, the village was one of Sweden’s largest carrot-growing areas. Its proximity to Lake Hjälmaren was also important to residents: fishing was a significant sideline for many farmers. A major lowering of the lake in the late 19th century made large areas of land cultivable that had previously been underwater or marshland. Carrot growing, fishing, and the creation of new farmland tell different parts of the story of this landscape.
Church and Runic Inscriptions
Stora Mellösa Church is open when staff are on site. Visitors are asked to call for the current week’s opening hours. The Göksholm burial chapel was added to the church in the mid-17th century. It contains funeral coats of arms and memorial plaques associated with the Göksholm families.
Two runic inscriptions are also part of the church’s history. Nä 12 records that Inga had the stone raised in memory of Ásl/Ǫsl, her stepson. Inscription Nä 13 mentions Spjallboði. Those interested in church heritage will find both architectural evidence and personal remembrances in the inscriptions.
Hjälmarsnäs Burial Ground
The Hjälmarsnäs burial ground contains 55 graves dating from approximately 1,000 to 1,600 years ago. When a damaged burial mound at Hjälmarsnäs was examined in 1918, the finds included burned human bones, fragments from at least two pottery vessels, a comb, jewellery, and numerous hazelnuts. These finds offer a tangible insight into the area’s archaeological history; they differ in age and subject from the evidence at the church.
Göksholm, Cycling, and Paddling
Göksholm Castle lies just north of Stora Mellösa on a peninsula in Lake Hjälmaren. The estate is privately owned and not open to the public. Today, the grounds contain the remains of a 13th-century fortification.
