Kungsbacken: Cycling Route, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Kungsbacken
Kungsbacken is a landmark on the Lilla Kungsleden: the route climbs up there, offers views over Lake Unden and follows the same path back to Sannerud. The Mossaberget Nature Reserve and historical connections also provide different points of interest when planning your trip. You can explore the cycling route, hikes in Tiveden National Park and local history as different aspects of your stay.
Take the Lilla Kungsleden to Kungsbacken
The Lilla Kungsleden branches off from the country road and climbs up to Kungsbacken, where you can enjoy views over Lake Unden. After Porsavattnet, the route follows gravel and forest roads to Kungsbacken and then returns to Sannerud along the same path. On the way back, it follows a forest road to the old village road by Kungsbacken.
The climb, trail surfaces and named places help you follow the route description: the views over Lake Unden are at the uphill turnoff, while gravel and forest roads characterise the section after Porsavattnet. There are no trail signs in some places. So check the map or GPX track before setting out.
Hiking trails and protected landscapes
Tiveden National Park protects an unspoilt landscape of forests, lakes and narrow rocky ravines. Pine and spruce forests, swamp forests and rock outcrops are free to develop into a true old-growth forest. More than 34 kilometres of marked hiking trails lead through deep rock crevices and over lichen-covered rocky ridges. Many trails are hilly and can be challenging; take this terrain into account when planning your hike.
The national park is easiest to reach by car, but it can also be reached by public transport, on foot or by bicycle. At the main entrance in the middle of the park, there is a car park, visitor information, toilets and an exhibition. Visitors can therefore enjoy marked trails as well as a central orientation point with practical facilities.
Another natural landmark is the Mossaberget Nature Reserve. It includes the properties Kungsbacken 1:2 and Kungsbacken 1:3; the reserve regulations date from 28 November 2022. Mossaberget is near Lake Unden and Tiveden National Park. The information about the properties and their location adds a specific connection to Kungsbacken to the picture of the protected landscape.
Historical connections to Kungsbacken
Kättefallet was a new settlement founded on the Kungsbacken estate in the second half of the 17th century. The use of local churches also played a role: some of the people of Kungsbacken considered Undenäs Church sufficient. After years of discussion, construction of a new church, Tiveds kyrka, began in Sannerud in 1847.
Specific life dates add to this local history. Olof Hansson was born in Kvarntorp in 1713 and died in Kungsbacken, Tived, in 1767. Kerstin Olofsdotter was born in Kungsbacken, Tived, in 1718 and died there in 1785. Together with the story of Kättefallet and the construction of the church in Sannerud, these individuals give the historical perspective a time and place.
