Kumla: Shoe History, Literature and City Park
Accommodation in Kumla
Kumla offers several distinct themes to explore when planning your trip: shoe history, literature, exhibitions and outdoor activities. The Skoindustrimuseet introduces the history of shoemaking and the development of shoe fashion; the Håkan Nesser Litteraturvandring connects Kumla with the author’s literary works. Kumla stadspark complements these cultural attractions with a running trail and summer activities. This lets you plan your time around your interests and the time of year you travel.
Shoe History and Literature
At the Skoindustrimuseet, you can follow the shoemaking process from leather to finished shoe. A journey through the history of shoe fashion adds to the insight into how shoes are made. Through exhibitions and authentic settings, the museum also presents the heritage of the period when Närke was the centre of Sweden’s shoe industry.
The Håkan Nesser Litteraturvandring leads through Kumla and settings from the 1960s, where Håkan Nesser grew up and which served as the basis for two of his books. The route starts at Kumla torg and is about 4 km long. It thus combines a specific literary connection with a stated route length. The entire route is accessible by wheelchair and pushchair; however, the path to the cement pipe (No. 8) is somewhat narrow and may be difficult to pass. If you are travelling with a wheelchair or pushchair, take this narrow section into account when planning your visit.
City Park: Running Trail and Summer Activities
Kumla stadspark is centrally located in Kumla, about 500 m from the town centre. It has a 2.5 km illuminated running trail. The Håkan Nesser Litteraturvandring is about 4 km long, while the illuminated running trail is 2.5 km. These figures refer to different offerings: a running trail in the park and a literary route through Kumla. So when comparing distances, also bear in mind which type of route interests you.
In summer, you can play minigolf, disc golf, padel, boules and volleyball at Kumla stadspark. If one of these activities is a deciding factor in your travel plans, take its seasonal availability into account. This lets you plan your visit to the park around what you want to do, rather than judging it solely by the length of the running trail.
Planning Exhibitions and Guided Tours
Kumla utställningshall is located in the town’s library building and hosts several exhibitions every year. This adds another cultural attraction to the themes of shoe history and literature. If you want to visit a particular exhibition, check its specific dates when planning your trip.
Guided tours of Sjöparkens växthus can also be planned around a specific period: they can be booked from 1 April to 30 September. Summer is the stated season for the park activities, while the greenhouse tours have a specific booking period. If either option is a deciding factor in your stay, plan around the relevant period and check the appropriate date.
