A glacial gravel terrace shapes the Rävåsen nature reserve in the centre of Karlskoga. The area is easy to access and partly hilly—a landscape you can also explore on a walk. The Gröna promenaden is 2.4 kilometres long and passes through Rävåsen, over the Skogskyrkogården, along Nobelparken and on to the butterfly and bumblebee garden on Sågholmen.

Hiking Trails, Beaches and Excursions by the Water

For longer hikes, there are three routes of different lengths and with different destinations: an eight-kilometre circular route around Angsjön starts and ends at Valåsen, east of Karlskoga. An 11-kilometre route runs between Valåsen and Svinsjöstugan. At 13 kilometres, the route between Odlingen and Lunnedet is the longest of the three. This gives you an initial way to compare the routes by length and destination.

There are several options for cycling too: outside the urban area, the Municipality of Karlskoga maintains four cycling routes through varied landscapes. Lunnedet also has mountain-bike trails. The two beaches on Möckeln are described differently: Näset Västra is centrally located on the north shore and has a 100-metre-long beach; Sandviksbadet has a large sandy beach with sunny and shaded areas.

The Lunnedet recreation and excursion area also includes the Knappfors locks. Facilities there include swimming spots, hiking trails, a boat landing, cafés and dining options, camping and market stalls. Walpurgis Night, Midsummer and Christmas market celebrations are held in the area each year. The Bergslags Canal also offers a water route from Filipstad to Karlskoga via 14 lakes, four rivers and six locks.

Art, Churches and Industrial History

The Karlskoga Art Gallery hosts exhibitions of art, crafts and photography by established and local artists. Around ten exhibitions are held there each year, and admission is free. Regular events include exhibition openings and artist talks accompanied by music. Tingshusparken surrounds the art gallery. The building originally housed the holding cells of the courthouse where Alfred Nobel’s will was legally validated.

Karlskoga Church has roots dating back to the late 16th century and is considered one of the most interesting churches in Bergslagen. Its sacristy preserves wall paintings from the time it was built. The Bofors Industrial Museum offers a different historical focus, presenting 350 years of industrial history. The history of the Bofors ironworks in Karlskoga began in 1646.

Nobelparken is in the north of the city, immediately south of Alfred Nobel’s Björkborn. Björkborn is located in Nobel’s last home in Sweden. Guided tours are available there, as are performances for groups. Children can explore experiments and scientific phenomena at Fiffiga Huset. Café Nobel, in Björkborn’s old barn, serves coffee, tea and ice cream from Kling.

Things to Do and Travel Information

At Boda Borg Karlskoga, an admission ticket includes 25 quests with different themes and challenges. Groups work together to complete the timed tasks; simulations and virtual reality are not included. Gelleråsen Arena offers bookable sports-car experiences on the racetrack, with guidance on the racing line, braking techniques and theory.

Karlskoga Concert Hall is within walking distance of the town centre and has 597 seats and six wheelchair spaces. It is suitable for events such as stand-up comedy, concerts and lectures. For travel, the E18 between Stockholm and Oslo runs through the Municipality of Karlskoga. The nearest railway station is in Degerfors, about 14 kilometres from Karlskoga bus station; connecting buses are available.

If you are looking for a hotel in Karlskoga, base your plans on the experiences you have in mind: hiking trails and beaches offer a different focus from art, industrial history or events. This way, you can decide before booking which aspects of the destination matter most for your trip.
