Mariedamm offers several distinct highlights: Trehörningens masugn represents the region’s former ironworking industry, Mariedammsleden offers hiking in an area shaped by cultural history, and Skiren is a swimming spot in the small locality of Mariedamm. When planning a stay, you can decide what to focus on: historic sites, nature and trails, or a swimming spot.

Ironworking and history

Trehörningens masugn is located in Mariedamm and is a preserved testament to the region’s former ironworking industry. It is considered Sweden’s best-preserved mulltimmerhytta. Guided tours of the masugn can be booked; as booking arrangements may change, check the options before your trip. The former English Park is located next to the ironworks site, and guided tours can also be booked there. If you are interested in both historical subjects, check the tour options for each in advance.

Grillska graven lies between the village and Trehörningens masugn. Members of the influential family were laid to rest there. Another historical subject is the Mariedammsbrakteat: this small gold amulet was found in the ground and dates from between 400 and 700. It was probably worn as a protective symbol. Its cautious interpretation is as much a part of its history as its specific dating.

Hiking trails and nature

Mariedammsleden starts at Trehörningens masugn and passes through an area rich in mines and cultural history. The trail runs by the meadow Runsala äng, with its diverse flora. Runsala ek, an oak tree several hundred years old with a circumference of 540 cm, also stands along the trail. Hiking here brings both the history of mining and notable natural features into view.

Runsala Nature Reserve consists of old meadow and pastureland, lush deciduous forest and the deep Runsala ravine. A marked 1.8-kilometre circular trail leads into the area from the car park in the northwestern part of the reserve. The trail descriptions emphasize different things: the circular trail has a stated length, while Mariedammsleden focuses on the area’s many mines and cultural history.

Swimming spot and picnic area

Skiren is a swimming spot in the small locality of Mariedamm. It has a changing cabin, a toilet, a jetty and a small sandy beach. If you are looking for a swimming spot with these facilities, these specific features can help you plan your visit. There is also a picnic area with a wind shelter and fire pit by Lake Trehörningen. The swimming spot and picnic area can thus be distinguished by their different amenities.

Charcoal-burning week and seasonal café

Every year, the charcoal-burning team builds a charcoal kiln and invites visitors to a programme during Charcoal-Burning Week. Dates and programme details vary from year to year. If you would like to include Charcoal-Burning Week in your travel plans, check the current event dates in advance. There is also a café at Trehörningens masugn. It is seasonal, so check before your trip whether it will be open during your stay.
