When searching for a hotel in Tärendö, the destination’s themes can help guide your plans: rivers, cultural history, and nature activities offer different points of interest. Consider whether you would like to focus your stay on historical topics, hiking, canoeing, birdwatching, or seasonal foraging.

Rivers and Tärendöholmen

The Tärendöälven draws its water from the Torneälven and carries it into the Kalixälven. Tärendöholmen is a festival site at the confluence of the Kalixälven and the Tärendöälven. Even before it was used as a festival site, the island was a natural gathering place for outings, swimming, games, and dancing. Tärendöholmen thus combines its present-day role as a festival site with a longer history of shared leisure activities.

Church, museum, and mill history

Tärendö kyrka is located on the Kalixälven and was inaugurated on April 18, 1880. Hembygdsgården is a museum about Tornedalian Finnish farming culture. Kvarnen på Pänninsaari was in active use until 1953 and was then renovated in the 1980s, after the water had taken its toll on the building over the years. One of Sweden’s oldest reindeer enclosures is located at Palolaki. Together, these places and stories lead from the church and farming culture to the history of a mill and the reindeer enclosure.

Hiking, nature watching, and canoeing

A trail leads to the Palolaki reindeer enclosure. It is marked with signs and trail markers and has information boards about nature, wildlife, and plant life. The hike can be started from Männikövägen or Selkävaaravägen, giving you two named starting points to choose from. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions, as route information and markings may change.

The Suorsa Nature Reserve has a trail about 4 km long. At Palolaki, markers and nature information boards characterize the trail; in the Suorsa Nature Reserve, the approximate length helps you gauge the hike. The two destinations therefore offer different points of reference for planning a walk.

The entire Tärendöälven can be explored by canoe. Here, the river itself is the focus, unlike the hikes mentioned above. Water conditions can change, so take them into account when planning a canoe trip.

At Äihämääjärvi, in the area around Tärendö, many bird species can be observed at different times of year. There are also two birdwatching towers. Birdwatching is therefore a distinct focus alongside hiking and paddling.

Seasonal nature and foraging

Mushroom and berry picking are also among Tärendö’s nature-based activities. The forests and marshes are home to edible species including porcini mushrooms, morels, lingonberries, blueberries, and cloudberries, which can be picked. The two types of mushrooms are listed alongside three types of berries. This adds a culinary aspect to the nature experiences.
