Discover Juoksengi at the Arctic Circle
Accommodation in Juoksengi
Juoksengi lies on the Torne River on the Swedish-Finnish border. The Arctic Circle runs through the village and is considered a natural visitor attraction; a monument is dedicated to this latitude.
Village history by the river
Juoksengi is a long, linear village by the river, with medieval origins. However, traces of settlement along the riverbanks of present-day Juoksengi date back around 4,000 years. These two time periods lead to different chapters in the village’s history: early traces of human settlement and the medieval origins of the village’s present-day layout.
The natural meadows of Mäntysuo and Isosuo are associated with Juoksengi. Together, they cover just over 870 hectares. Juoksengi kyrka was built by the villagers themselves and inaugurated on February 2, 1963. Today, it is owned and operated by a non-profit association; a church service is held there about once a month.
Other memorial sites tell different stories about the village: on the hill of Surmasaajo, a memorial stone commemorates the local defence of 1717. The building of the school founded in 1882 now serves as the village’s local heritage centre. Polcirkelhuset was moved from Lennart Haapaniemi’s farm to its present location in 2001. Together with the church, these historic buildings and places give your stay a tangible connection to local history.
The Arctic Circle and the border location
In Juoksengi, the Arctic Circle is more than just a geographic line. The Arctic Circle Monument is a stainless-steel globe, with an arc marking the Arctic Circle. Its form makes the latitude easy to visualize and gives the idea a tangible shape. This concrete design feature also helps visitors understand the village’s unique location.
In winter, an ice road connects Juoksengi with Juoksenki on the Finnish side. Its use depends on winter conditions. If you plan to include this cross-border connection in your itinerary, check the current conditions in advance.
Events and activities
Swim the Arctic Circle is an open-water swimming event in the village of Juoksengi at the Arctic Circle. During the competition, participants cross both the border between Sweden and Finland and the Arctic Circle. This makes the village’s geographic location an immediate part of the sporting experience. If you want to plan your trip around the competition, check the event announcement for the relevant dates.
Salmon fishing in the Torne River also continues to attract anglers to Juoksengi. Conditions and rules vary. If fishing is the reason for your trip, check the applicable conditions and rules in advance. Polcirkelmarknad is a market event in Juoksengi; its dates vary. If you are planning your trip around it, check the current programme before deciding on your travel dates.
Byahuset is also a useful point of reference in the village: it has a restaurant in summer, and there are camping pitches on the grounds. The seasonal restaurant schedule may be a factor when choosing when to travel.
