Luleå combines a diverse cultural offering with an extensive archipelago and outdoor activities. When planning a stay, very different interests come together: contemporary art, theatre, the archipelago and activities tied to specific seasons. If you are looking for a hotel in Luleå, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your visit.

Art, theatre and history

Luleå Konsthall is located in Kulturens hus in central Luleå. It focuses on contemporary art, with works by local, national and international artists. Art exhibitions are shown year-round in four periods; the specific exhibition programme changes. Guided tours and practical workshops are aimed at all age groups, although individual activities vary depending on the programme. If you have a particular date or workshop in mind, check the relevant offering.

Norrbottensteatern is located in the theatre building in Norra Hamn and has three stages. Each year, the theatre stages around seven of its own productions and gives around 150 performances. These include guest performances, theatre lunches and Saturday matinees. The theatre’s own productions and the total number of performances describe different aspects of its programme. As schedules change, check specific dates in advance.

Historical landmarks also offer different perspectives: Luleå Cathedral was inaugurated in 1893. In nearby Gammelstads kyrkstad, more than 400 church cottages remain today; the site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. Cultural interests thus range from a church building with a specific date of inauguration to a preserved church town with World Heritage status.

The archipelago and seasonal activities

The Luleå Archipelago comprises 1,312 islands, islets and skerries. Its landscape features brackish water as well as a mix of old-growth forest, bare rocks and long bathing beaches. Excursions in the archipelago offer the opportunity to explore its chapels and lighthouses. Excursion boats serve the larger islands; if you are planning a specific trip, check the timetable in advance. In winter, many kilometres of winter roads in the archipelago are cleared for locals and visitors.

Friluftsfrämjandet in Luleå organises paddling activities in spring, summer and autumn, led by trained instructors. The programme may change during the season. In summer, the organisation has kayaks at Gültzauudden by Hälsans Hus in Luleå; the location may change. When planning, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the seasonal paddling programme and the specific summer location.

Other activities have their own requirements: fishing is permitted at Hertsöträsket with a fishing licence. Check the fishing licence requirements before fishing. Ormberget has a downhill ski slope and an extensive, illuminated system of fitness trails, which are groomed for cross-country skiing in winter. Gråsjälören has a seasonal warming hut; firewood and barbecue areas are also available for visitors.

There is a clear distinction between activities by season: Luleå Konsthall holds exhibitions year-round, paddling activities are organised in spring, summer and autumn, and cross-country skiing on the Ormberget trails is a winter activity. This makes it easy to distinguish seasonal activities from cultural offerings available year-round.
