In Arvidsjaur, Sámi cultural history, historic buildings, trails of varying lengths and winter sports are among the different themes to consider when planning your trip. The places and activities below offer concrete ideas to help you plan your stay.

Sámi Traditions and Local History

Lappstaden is a Sámi church town and the only one among the older surviving church towns of Sámi origin to showcase Sámi building traditions. Storstämningen is celebrated each year on the last Sunday in August with traditional festivities. This recurring date can serve as a fixed point in time for a visit in late summer.

Gamla Prästgården was built in 1891 and has been a museum since the 1970s. Guided tours for groups can be booked in advance by contacting the venue. Café Hembygdsgården at Gamla Prästgården often serves waffles; seasonal café opening arrangements may change.

The railway area is also part of the town’s history. It includes a station building with a waiting room, a warehouse and office building, a loading ramp and smaller storage buildings. Storgatan has numerous restaurants, cafés and shops—a practical landmark if you want to explore local life.

Trails in and around Arvidsjaur

Kulturstigen is 300 metres long and starts at Bogårdsmuren. Prästtjärnsstigen is 2.5 kilometres long and goes around Prästtjärnen. The lengths and routes give you a concrete basis for choosing between the short cultural trail and the longer loop; no walking time is specified.

Kyrkstigarna are short trails in the town of Arvidsjaur. On Lillberget, a short hiking trail leads to a viewpoint with sweeping views over Arvidsjaur and its surroundings. This gives you a choice between town trails and a trail with a viewpoint.

The VittjĂĄkk-AkkanĂĄlke nature reserve lies in the area around Arvidsjaur, outside the town centre. It has numerous hiking trails, fire pits and wind shelters. The mountain peaks are more than 700 metres high and offer expansive views. The area adds hiking options and places to rest to the wider surroundings, while Kyrkstigarna are located right in town.

Winter Sports and Seasonal Experiences

Rymmarstadion has a 4.5-kilometre floodlit cross-country ski trail and a biathlon facility with illuminated targets. Children and adults can also develop their skiing technique there in a playful way. Prästberget has three downhill runs of varying difficulty, from red to black. The offerings are distinct: cross-country skiing and biathlon at Rymmarstadion, and alpine runs at Prästberget.

A seasonal steam train runs from Arvidsjaur station to Slagnäs. Check the current timetable before your trip if you plan to include this experience.
