In Vissefjärda, you’ll encounter church history, local memories of Nils Dacke and activities by the water. The church stables and church give the town a distinctive cultural and historical character; trails, golf and seasonal winter activities offer further options for planning your trip.

The church and traces of Dacke history

Vissefjärda Church is a stone church and was consecrated on February 28, 1773. Its altarpiece was painted by Pehr Hörberg in 1795. The bells hang in a bell tower whose current structure dates from the 19th century. The building’s history, paintings and bell tower come together in one place.

The Dacke Stone beside the church commemorates Nils Dacke; a crossbow on its peak points toward Stockholm. There are also remains by the church that may be parts of the Vesa borg defensive structure. Finds of stone and flint tools near the Lyckebyån and its tributaries within Vissefjärda show that people have lived and worked here for thousands of years. In the Middle Ages, Vissefjärda was an important border region for trade with Denmark; the events known as the Dacke Feud took place here in 1542–1543.

Church stables: museum and Midsummer celebration

The Vissefjärda church stables were built in 1855 and provided space for 200 horses. The local heritage museum there displays old everyday objects and household goods used by people from more than 100 villages in the parish, many of which they made themselves. Another exhibition brings together old postcards from Vissefjärda, reflecting the period from 1900 onward.

Museum visits, guided tours and coffee service are available seasonally: Monday to Friday, July 1 to August 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. Check before your trip whether these hours apply to your visit. Amateur performances are part of the annual Midsummer celebration. Local people have performed them since 1984, and they are based on events from local history. A historic steam engine is also fired up at the celebration each year: its wheels turn as smoke rises from the chimney.

Local culture and historic ensembles

Kyrkeby Bränneri is located near Vissefjärda, by the Lyckebyån. The site is considered Sweden’s best-preserved schnapps distillery and was declared one of the cultural heritage buildings of Kalmar County in 2000. Its 28 buildings include a malt house, a building for the spirits cistern, a schnapps room, a potato cellar and a storehouse. Today, schnapps is made there from potatoes; since 2017, the historic steam engine has been put into operation each year for this purpose, using locally grown potatoes as raw material. Guided tours are available; visitor arrangements may vary by season.

Kallmanstorpet is set in scenic surroundings near Lake Törn and within reach of Vissefjärda. The ensemble includes a residential building with furnishings, acquired and restored by the Vissefjärda Hembygdsförening, as well as a restored barn. For another perspective on Nils Dacke, the local heritage association offers a self-guided tour of his home region, with a map and places to visit. Check whether the map is available before planning your trip.

Vissefjärda Bio is also part of the cultural scene: the Vissefjärda Bio association runs the cinema, which regularly screens films, including in 3D. If you’re planning a visit to the cinema, check the current program.

By the lake, on the trails and enjoying sports

Törestorps badplats on Lake Törn is accessible and has a ramp into the water, an accessible toilet and shower, and tables for wheelchair users. Other facilities include changing areas, benches, a swing set and a barbecue. There is also a bathing area with a campsite on the outskirts of Vissefjärda.

For golf, Vissefjärda offers the 18-hole Björketorpsbanan course and a short course by Kyrksjön. The municipal cycling network includes routes in Vissefjärda; the town has its own cycling map. If you’re looking for running and fitness trails, listed distances are 1,250 meters, 2.5 kilometers and 5 kilometers, two of them lit. Check trail details locally.

The approximately 7-kilometer Torsjöleden trail runs through forest and natural surroundings. The route there follows the Vissefjärda–Påryd road, with a turnoff to Kammarbo. Trail conditions may vary seasonally; check before setting out. The Vissefjärda samhällsförening rents out boats for half a day or a full day. Separately, it rents out moorings in Törestorp.

Seasonal differences to consider when planning

Vissefjärda’s campsite is open seasonally from May 1 to September 30; its facilities were rebuilt in 2021. Check the dates before your trip. In winter, cross-country ski trails are prepared in the area using a snowmobile, depending on snow conditions and local maintenance. The ice rink at the Vissefjärda school sports field is also seasonal: Vissefjärda GIF floods it when winter conditions are cold enough. For planning purposes, this means a clear distinction between set seasonal dates and activities that depend on snow or cold temperatures.
