The church and local history
Misterhult Church was built between 1777 and 1780 and is of great cultural and historical value as a representative parish church of the late 18th century. Its neoclassical character is evident in its bell-shaped cupola, symmetrically arranged windows and smooth facades. The cupola defines the church’s silhouette, while the arrangement of the windows and the facades give the building its regular design.
The area around Misterhult Church includes two chapels, the vicarage and the parish hall, as well as the church and churchyard. The sacristy of Misterhult’s oldest church has been preserved at the Old Cemetery. West of the old churchyard, a small pond appears during high water; it was once a lake. Misterhultsbygden is the place in Sweden with the largest number of Bronze Age graves. This archaeological perspective complements the insight into local life provided by the buildings and objects at Misterhult’s local heritage site. Prehistoric traces and everyday history thus offer distinct cultural perspectives side by side.
