Discover Brandstorp on Lake Vättern
Accommodation in Brandstorp
Brandstorp lies directly on Lake Vättern. For a trip focused on cultural history and life by the lake, there are two distinct highlights: Brandstorp Church, with its historic details, and Brandstorp Local Heritage Centre, with collections about crafts, everyday life and shipping. The church’s seasonal opening hours are also important for planning. You can tailor your visits to the specific topics and conditions that interest you most.
Brandstorp and Lake Vättern
Brandstorp is one of three harbours in Habo Municipality; all three are on Lake Vättern. The lake is also in view from Brandstorp Local Heritage Centre. The connection to the water is reflected in the exhibitions too: the boathouse focuses on fishing and boatbuilding, while the museum building covers shipping on Lake Vättern. The view, harbour and maritime themes offer different perspectives on the village’s relationship with the lake.
Brandstorp Church: Visiting and History
The church’s opening hours vary by season. From 15 May to 30 June, Brandstorp Church is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. From 1 July to 31 August, the weekday hours are the same; at weekends, the church is open from 10 am to 6 pm. At other times, it is open when staff are on site or a service is being held. Check the opening hours before your visit, especially if you plan to come outside the listed times.
An audio guide can be started at the push of a button inside the church; it is available in Swedish, English and German. Guided tours for groups can be booked in advance. Booking requests must be received at least one month before the desired date.
The interior was decorated in the 1740s with paintings by Johan Kinnerus, an artist from Jönköping. One of the ceiling paintings depicts the church itself. There is also a notable historical detail outside the church: the wooden enclosure around the cemetery in Brandstorp is one of the very few of its kind to have survived in the country.
Brandstorp Church was preceded by a medieval wooden chapel. According to tradition, it was moved to this site from Häldesholms by in the 1620s. This cautious account is part of the history of the earlier building and differs from the specific information about the later interior decoration.
Local History at Brandstorp Local Heritage Centre
The octagonal wooden tent at Brandstorp Local Heritage Centre is divided into eight functional sections. It was built in 1872 and displayed at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1878. It served as a sparsely furnished, unheated summer hut. Its shape, construction and use give the building a distinctive place alongside the museum’s collections.
The museum displays older objects from the parish, including a two-wheeled horse-drawn cart from Tidaholm. A relocated forge contains tools used by blacksmiths and other craftspeople. The exhibitions complement the themes of architecture and church art with objects relating to crafts and community life. The boathouse focuses on fishing and boatbuilding; in the museum building, photographs and stories tell of shipping on Lake Vättern.
A useful landmark for visiting the church is on County Road 195: near the village of Brandstorp, a road sign points to the turn-off for Brandstorp Church. Together with the seasonal opening hours, this information helps you plan your church visit.
