Valdshult offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: a wooden church with an older history, a cemetery with three 17th-century grave markers, the Valdshultsbadet swimming area, and the Svinhultsåsen nature reserve east of the village. These subjects differ considerably: the church and cemetery focus on historical landmarks, while the swimming area and landscape offer a different emphasis. Before your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in local history or in swimming and the landscape.

The church and cemetery in historical context

Valdshults kyrka is a wooden church built in 1905. Its predecessor was also a wooden church and was demolished in 1904. The sequence of years distinguishes the two buildings: the earlier church’s history ended in 1904, and today’s Valdshults kyrka was built in 1905. These two dates mark the transition from one wooden church to another, not two dates for the same building.

The oldest parts of the former wooden church date to the 13th century. Valdshult Cemetery was probably established at the same time as this old church, in the second half of the 13th century. The early history of the church and the cemetery therefore probably belong to the same period, while the present church building dates from the early 20th century.

Three 17th-century grave markers still stand in an undisturbed section of the cemetery. There is also an old cemetery gate on the grounds, dating from 1692. The grave markers and the gate extend the focus beyond the history of the church buildings to the cemetery itself.

Read as a timeline, this history probably begins in the 13th century, continues through the grave markers and gate from the 17th century, and culminates in the wooden church of 1905. This makes it possible to distinguish the medieval history from the more recent church building.

Cemetery tour and Church Gravel Loop

A digital tour of the cemetery is available, which you can use on your smartphone while there or online. The Church Gravel Loop passes Valdshults kyrka and can be shortened at several points. The two options have different points of focus: the tour is about the cemetery, while the route passes the church and can be shortened at several points.

Swimming area and landscape

Valdshultsbadet is a small swimming area with a gently sloping sandy beach. It was classified as a new swimming area for the 2026 bathing season. This classification may change in later seasons; facilities and conditions may also change. Therefore, check the current situation before swimming. The small swimming area and its gently sloping sandy beach offer a different focus from the church and cemetery.

The Svinhultsåsen nature reserve lies east of Valdshult. It consists of a rocky escarpment surrounded by spruce forest. While Valdshultsbadet is characterized by its sandy beach, the landscape at Svinhultsåsen is defined by rock and spruce forest.
