If you are looking for a hotel in Bispgården, you can plan your trip around hiking, winter sports or culture. Geologistigen and Järåstigen offer different landscape highlights, while Forsbacken is a destination for alpine winter sports. Skogsskolemuséet is located in Bispgården, whereas Thailändska Paviljongen is in Utanede, outside the village. This distinction between locations helps you plan each interest as a separate activity.

Hiking trails with different highlights

Geologistigen passes various soil types that together form a typical northern Swedish river valley. The trail includes boardwalks over Långmyran and across a stream. The focus is therefore on both the valley’s soil formations and specific crossings. If you pay particular attention to landscape features when hiking, these are the defining highlights of this trail.

Järåstigen leads to the Byforsen waterfall and flower meadows overlooking the Indalsälven. After the bridge, the trail continues onto the peninsula where the Annedal estate, including its manor house, once stood. Compared with Geologistigen, the focus shifts from soil types and boardwalks to the waterfall, flower meadows, river views and the historical connection to Annedal. The former estate is part of the peninsula’s history; the route described here goes as far as the peninsula.

Culture: forestry history and a Thai pavilion

Skogsskolemuséet in Bispgården showcases forestry education and forestry work in the 20th century. It also covers the surrounding natural environment and the Fors section of the Indalsälven Geopark. The museum was reported to have reopened on 11 June 2023. Tours can be booked by phone; check the booking contact before your trip. Forestry education and forestry work offer two perspectives on the 20th century: knowledge and training on the one hand, and the work itself on the other. The nature topics complement this historical focus.

Thailändska Paviljongen is in Utanede, outside Bispgården. It is the only Thai royal pavilion outside Thailand. Its cultural connection is very different from the forestry history of Skogsskolemuséet. If you include this visit in your travel plans, bear in mind that Utanede is a separate destination.

Winter sports: ski slope and cross-country trails

Forsbacken is a ski slope in Bispgården, in eastern Jämtland, and is managed by the alpine section of OK Forsarna. It is about 400 metres long and has a vertical drop of approximately 70 metres. The two measurements answer different questions: the length describes the distance, while the vertical drop describes the difference in elevation. Both figures are approximate and provide a brief overview of the slope.

For cross-country skiing, OK Forsarna operates four trails. The easy loop is about 400 metres long. The 1.4-kilometre 1,5-an and the 2.5-kilometre 2,5-an are lit; the 7.6-kilometre 8-an is partly unlit. Length and lighting are therefore useful points of reference when comparing the trails. Of the two lit trails, 2,5-an is longer than 1,5-an; 8-an is the longest of the routes listed and is partly unlit.
