The Sámi cultural landscape around Ljungdalen has been shaped by thousands of years of reindeer herding. At the same time, hiking and pilgrimage trails lead through mountain birch forest, heath, woodland and marshland to the open mountains. Cultural history and outdoor activities offer different ways to get to know Ljungdalen as a travel destination.

Cultural Landscape and History

The Hembygdsgården in Ljungdalen is home to a turf hut built in the traditional South Sámi style. It was restored in summer 2021. The hut is a tangible reference point for Sámi architecture, which is part of the history of the cultural landscape around Ljungdalen.

Gammelgården also brings together several aspects of local history: it is one of the oldest buildings in Ljungdalen, and the Gammelgården Museum displays older household and work tools from Ljungdalen and the surrounding area. There are also two burial mounds at Gammelgården. They are thought to date to the Late Iron Age, from 400 to 1050 AD. At this named location, buildings, everyday objects and archaeological traces come together.

Hikes and Mountain Trails

For routes of varying lengths, the Elljusspåret in Ljungdalen offers five different trail lengths. A considerably longer option is the three-day Vålådalen–Ljungdalen hike. It leads through mountain birch forest, across extensive mountain heaths and up to towering mountain massifs. The duration and the landscapes described give this hike a character of its own.

The Dunsjöravinen via Dorditjärn route offers a different landscape: it follows the Finnbäcken for most of the way, passes through woodland and marshland, and climbs to the open mountains. Another trail with a cultural connection is the old pilgrimage route. You can join it at Allmänbacken in Ljungdalen; it passes Öjön and Helags before reaching Nedalshytta in Norway.

Tandåfallet is another possible stop along the way: from Tandån, a detour of about 500 metres leads to the waterfall. The approximate distance can help you include this detour in your plans without confusing it with the longer hikes.

Flatruet and Excursions

Flatruet is a public road between Mittådalen and Ljungdalen, at an elevation of 975 metres above sea level. If your trip takes you over Flatruet, check road conditions and possible closures in advance. On Flatruet, you can hike, cycle or ski and enjoy a 360-degree view of the mountain peaks. The road, its elevation and the activities available make Flatruet a distinct part of your trip planning.

For horseback rides in the mountains, Turridning in Ljungdalen offers half-day and full-day tours. Longer rides are available on request. If you plan this activity, check current booking availability; be sure to request longer tours specifically.

When planning how to get between named locations, it is also useful to understand the difference between two transport services: Taxi Ljungdalsfjällen runs between Ljungdalen and Kläppen. The seasonal, reservation-based Helagsexpressen runs from Kläppen in Ljungdalen to Helags. Passengers can bring their skis for the onward journey or make a round trip without skis. Check whether the Helagsexpressen is currently running before you travel.

Annual Event

The Helags Fjällmara adds an event to the outdoor activities: Ljungdalens GIF has organised it annually since 1985. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the date for your travel year.
