Gotlands Tofta offers several points of interest for planning a trip: a bathing spot, marked circular routes, a natural forest area and historic sites. If you’re looking for a hotel in Gotlands Tofta, the beach, hiking or local history may be different priorities for your trip. Consider which of these interests is most important when choosing where to stay.

Beach and Coastal Area

Tofta SmÄgÄrde is an EU bathing water site with a relatively gently sloping beach, located in the northern part of Tofta Strand. Tofta Strand is a sandy beach with a beach strip approximately 20 metres wide. It stretches from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd in the north to the SnÄltorp Nature Reserve in the south. SmÄgÄrde in the north and SnÄltorp in the south are two landmarks along this stretch of coast.

Hiking and Nature

The Tofta Strand-GnisvÀrdleden comprises two colour-marked circular routes: the yellow-and-white route is about 6 kilometres long, and the green-and-white route is about 9 kilometres long. The yellow-and-white route is therefore the shorter option, and the green-and-white route the longer one. Comparing the routes can help you choose one that fits your plans for the day. Check the latest route information before setting out. The green-and-white route is about three kilometres longer than the yellow-and-white route, making it around one and a half times as long as the shorter of the two colour-marked circular routes.

SmÄgÄrde naturskog is a small natural forest area near Tofta beach. It includes areas of shifting sand dunes that stretch from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd to Tofta södra. A nature trail runs through the forest, starting opposite the entrance to Tofta Strandpensionat. The circular routes, by contrast, start at the large car park at Tofta bathing area. The southern landmarks for the two landscapes also differ: Tofta Strand reaches as far as SnÄltorp Nature Reserve, while the dune areas extend to Tofta södra.

Culture and History

Tofta kyrka is a medieval stone church. The oldest parts of its tower date from the early 13th century. This more specific dating refers to the oldest parts of the tower. Tofta HembygdsgĂ„rd is a historic site run and maintained by the Tofta Hembygdsförening. Activities take place there throughout the year. Visitors can take part in the annual Fagning or attend flea markets. As dates may vary, check what is on offer in advance. The church and HembygdsgĂ„rd represent different aspects of cultural history: medieval church architecture on the one hand, and the association’s work at a historic site and activities throughout the year on the other.

Getting There

Tofta has relatively good public transport connections. A cycle path runs along Road 140 between Visby and Klintehamn, improving accessibility for visitors. Visby and Klintehamn indicate the route’s location; for public transport, check the current timetables for your travel date.
