Rivers and cycling routes

The Vanån and Västerdalälven rivers meet in the centre of Vansbro. These same rivers are the setting for Vansbrosimningen, a long-distance open-water swimming competition. This puts both a specific geographical feature and a sporting event at the heart of Vansbro. The competition takes place in the river, not in a pool.

The Vansbrosimningen course is three kilometres long: two kilometres run through the Vanån and one kilometre through the Västerdalälven. The longer section is therefore in the Vanån, and the shorter one in the Västerdalälven. If you are planning to visit for the competition, check the event dates before deciding when to stay.

Several cycling routes in the Vansbro–Dala-Järna area run along the banks of the Västerdalälven and the Vanån. Strategically placed benches offer places to rest and peaceful views of the water. The riverside setting, rest stops and water views give these routes their distinctive character.

The old Inlandsbanan railway offers a different kind of cycling experience: rail bikes can be ridden on it, north of Dalasågen and south of Sågen. This gives you two distinct cycling experiences: riverside routes with benches and water views in the Vansbro–Dala-Järna area, and rail-bike rides on the old Inlandsbanan, with their own directional references.

Buildings and local history

Vansbro railway station was declared a listed building of national importance by government decision on 15 May 1975. The date refers to the listing decision, not the year the building was constructed. The Loftboden at Vansbro hembygdsgård offers a different point of reference: this wooden building dates from the late 18th century. The two dates refer to different things: the station’s listing decision and the estimated age of the Loftboden.

Vansbro kyrka stands in a pine grove on the east bank of the Vanån and has a detached bell tower. The river thus features in different contexts: as part of the swimming course and as a geographical reference point for the church’s location. The detached tower is a distinctive architectural feature of the church complex.

The Jofsstugan is also located at Vansbro hembygdsgård. It was formerly used, among other things, as an overnight hut for log drivers on the Vanån. Unlike the Loftboden’s age, the Jofsstugan’s former use tells the story of log driving on the river. The hembygdsgård thus brings together building history and a historical function from the world of work.

The Sågverksmuseet features photographs and objects from Vansbro’s sawmill era, as well as photographs from the era of timber rafting. Its exhibits therefore bring together two themes from the area’s history: both photographs and objects relate to the sawmill, while photographs cover timber rafting. The museum’s opening hours are tied to those of the library. If you are planning a visit, check the library’s opening hours in advance.
