Sunnansjö: Lake Väsman, Trails and Traces of Ironworks
Accommodation in Sunnansjö
Sunnansjö as a Destination
Lake Väsman lies on one side of Sunnansjö. Industrial history, a bathing spot and trails in the village offer different starting points for planning your trip. These themes differ in focus: the village’s history includes buildings and a museum collection, while trails, the lake and fishing waters are central to activities.
Traces of Sunnansjö Bruk
Sunnansjö Herrgård is a very well-preserved example of a smaller ironworks manor house, which developed in the setting of ironworks operations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Next to the manor house is an industrial area with the remains of a smelting works and a forge. The preserved Labbi and weighing house recall the centuries of activity at Sunnansjö Bruk in Sunnansjö. A power station was built at the former Smebacken in 1913. For centuries, iron cargo from Sunnansjö Bruk was transported across Lake Väsman. The dates put these traces in context: the manor house developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, iron was transported over a period of centuries, and the power station was built in 1913.
Local Heritage Museum and Autumn Market
The Sunnansjö Local Heritage Museum has a collection of local objects that reflect life in the former mining and farming communities; the Grangärde folk costume is displayed in a separate exhibition. The annual autumn market is held on the grounds of the Sunnansjö Local Heritage Museum. The market features handicraft stalls and bread baked on site in the baking oven. If you are planning your trip around the market, check the current event dates in advance.
Walking Trails and Olsjö kyrkstig
For exercise in the village, there are walking trails and an outdoor gym. Olsjö kyrkstig can be walked in either direction; benches are available at several rest stops. If you want to choose between different types of route, you can opt for walking trails in the village or the church path with its rest stops. Conditions on Olsjö kyrkstig may vary depending on the season and weather; check them before setting out.
Bathing Spot, Lakes and Fishing
Sandviksbadet is a bathing spot in Sunnansjö on Lake Väsman. Sunnansjö Fiskevårdsområde includes about 20 lakes. Trolling is possible in the larger lakes Bysjön, Saxen, Övre Noren, Nedre Noren and Gänsen. This gives you two distinct options for water activities in the area: a bathing spot on Lake Väsman and trolling opportunities in larger lakes. Fishing permits for the Fiskevårdsområde are sold digitally; check the current products and terms before purchasing.
Fika in the Village
Marias 50-tals nostalgicafé is located in the centre of Sunnansjö and serves light lunches and fika. If you are planning a visit, please check current availability beforehand.
