For a stay in Björbo, Fänforsen is a standout natural attraction, with trails and local culture rounding out the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Björbo, it may help to consider which of these themes will shape your trip: rapids and activities on the Västerdalälven, hiking, or a glimpse into the history of the fäbod. The differences here are tangible—from a stretch with a steep gradient to an exhibition beside the river.

Fänforsen: rapids and activities on the river

Fänforsen is a wild stretch of rapids with a strong current. It is 900 metres long and has a drop of 9 metres. As one of the largest river rapids south of Norrland, it defines the area’s natural appeal. Fishing is also possible at the Fänforsen nature rest area, where catch and release is practised.

Competitions are also part of the picture: freestyle, canoe slalom, whitewater downhill and kayak cross events are held at Fänforsen every year. Dala River Adventure offers whitewater rafting trips on the Västerdalälven from Nås downstream to Fänforsen in Björbo. Operations may vary by season, so check dates with the provider. On the same trip, participants can try a large raft for eight people and a small raft for two. This lets you experience two differently sized boats on one trip.

Trails and getting around

Fänforsen is accessible by car via the E16 and is also easy to reach by bicycle or on foot. There is a Dalatrafik bus stop nearby. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current stop and timetable in advance.

The centre of Fäbodledsområde 10 is at Mejdåsen, very close to Björbo. To reach the area, you can park at Tempo in Björbo, cross the old stone bridge and walk towards Mejdåsen. This guidance can help you plan your route to the area and its local landmarks.

Stage 10 between Salå and Dala-Floda follows the Västerdalälven along old paths and a railway embankment. The route is easy to walk.

Prästbuo and cultural history

Prästbuo is a fäbod right by Källbäckens by; its historical roots go back at least to the 17th century. There are places to rest and stay overnight. On Stage 10 between Salå and Dala-Floda, it is possible to stay overnight in the cabin at Prästbuo. Check booking and seasonal conditions before your trip.

In the early 1970s, the ski section of Björbo IF built a 2.5-kilometre floodlit trail at Prästbuo. If you plan to use the trail, check its current condition locally.

Another cultural highlight is beside Fänforsen: the “Konst i byn” exhibition runs during the summer half of the year. The project has been run by the “Färg och form i Björbo” art group since 2015.
