Krylbo can be explored through three themes: railway history, an industrially shaped townscape and trails along the Dalälven. When planning your stay, you can consider these separately: the SKÅJ Museum and the railway station introduce the development of the railways, historic streets reveal older townscapes, and the named routes offer walks and tours. This makes it easier to decide whether you would rather spend your time exploring railway heritage, local history or the outdoors on a trail.

Railways and the Townscape

The SKÅJ Museum, housed in Krylbo’s locomotive sheds, displays a collection of Swedish steam and electric locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars connected with the development of the railways in the 20th century. Museum visits are available by telephone appointment.

Krylbo was shaped by the development of the railways. To understand the timeline, distinguish between the information about two different lines: the Northern Main Line from Stockholm to Krylbo was completed in 1873; the Main Line between Mjölby and Krylbo opened around 1900. The Avesta-Krylbo railway station building was built in 1910 by Folke Zettervall, chief architect of SJ, and is in the National Romantic style. Together, the information about the lines and the station building offer different insights into Krylbo’s railway history: the development of the connections and the architecture of a specific building.

Krylbo’s industrial character is reflected in its old factory buildings and charming wooden houses. You can stroll along the historic streets and experience the industrial heritage. These streets and buildings make the town’s character a subject in its own right, beyond the railway collection: a walk takes you through the historic townscape, while the museum focuses on railway vehicles and development.

Walks and Trails Along the Dalälven

The Älvpromenaden riverside trail runs along both banks of the Dalälven from Avesta to Krylbo. In Krylbo, you can start the route at Stationsparken. This gives you both the route between the two towns and a specific starting point in Krylbo. If you would like to begin your walk here, Stationsparken is the suggested starting point.

Another route takes you to the Bruksleden: access to Stage 27 is close to Avesta Krylbo railway station. The stage follows lush natural surroundings along the Dalälven to Koppardalen. This section focuses on the riverside landscape and the route to Koppardalen. In the wider region around Krylbo, the Folkareleden in Avesta connects with the Bruksleden.

A marked section of the Folkareleden runs from Krylbo to Herrgården in Hedemora Municipality. Check the current trail markings and conditions before setting out. This section is distinct from the Älvpromenaden: here, the route to Herrgården and Hedemora Municipality are the reference points, while the Älvpromenaden runs along both riverbanks from Avesta to Krylbo.

Cycling the Besöksrundan

The Besöksrundan cycling route passes through Krylbo towards Karlfeldtsgården and is 25 km long. Optional detours are listed separately in the route overview. The route crosses flat terrain and is considered easy to cycle. The distance and terrain description offer two different points of reference for planning: the number of kilometres describes the route’s length, while the information about the terrain and difficulty indicates its character. This distinguishes the Besöksrundan cycling route from the walking and hiking trails along the Dalälven.
