Älvdalen: Porphyry History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Älvdalen
Discover Älvdalen through several distinctive themes: porphyry production and its quarries, historic buildings, and trails through forest and rocky landscapes. This lets you organize cultural sites and activities around the focus of your trip.
Church, Language and Porphyry History
The oldest parts of Älvdalen’s present-day church date back to the 1580s. The first stone church was built on the same site at that time. Älvdalska, an old language with roots in Old Norse, is also spoken in Älvdalen.
Nya Porfyrverket is an important site in the history of industry and one of Dalarna’s most significant industrial monuments. Frost Anders Andersson founded the works in Västäng in 1897. Its interior and machinery have remained practically unchanged since around 1900; production has since ceased. Guided tours are available in summer. If you plan to take a tour, check the dates before you travel.
The quarries at Blyberget tell the story of a long porphyry tradition: the old quarry was used from the beginning of the industry in 1788 until the early 1940s. The new quarry opened in 1939 and was used until the 1960s. The area around the porphyry quarries is considered significant for its cultural history; a small exhibition offers insights into the arduous work of quarrying stone.
Historic Sites and Circular Trails
Rots Skans was built as a fortification in 1677 during the reign of Charles XI. Within its ramparts, the site houses an open-air museum with about 20 buildings. The museum grounds showcase settlements, homes and crafts from the late Middle Ages to around 1900. You can book guided tours in advance; availability may depend on the season or require a reservation.
Mimmikulle is said to be the place where the first executions of people accused of witchcraft in Älvdalen took place. The historic trail there is about 1.5 kilometers long and ends with a coffee break on the banks of the Österdalälven. Guided activities may be seasonal, so take this into account when planning.
The Blyberget Nature Reserve has a hiking trail, a rest or shelter hut, and a picnic area. A guided hike passes through the natural and cultural heritage area, including quarries, forest and viewpoints. Hykjeberget is nearby, about 10 kilometers northeast of Älvdalen. Its summit reaches 594 meters above sea level; below it, the mountain drops away in an almost vertical, 100-meter-high cliff. Hykjeberget also has a marked two-kilometer circular trail. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season and weather.
The stretch of the Österdalälven below the Åsen hydroelectric plant as far as Storbrott has not been altered by the development of hydroelectric power. This gives the river landscape a distinctive character, while the marked section of the Romboleden offers a different kind of wayfinding: it is well signposted and has shelters with associated toilets every few kilometers. Seasonal conditions can affect the trails and facilities.
River, Fishing and Seasonal Activities
The Älvdalen Fishing Management Area has fishing waters in rivers, lakes, ponds and streams. The flowing waters are mainly home to trout and grayling; most fishing waters can be reached from nearby roads. Access and fishing regulations may vary by season, so it is worth checking the current rules before your visit. The Österdalälven offers high-quality river fishing for grayling and trout, and is also suitable for canoeing, with an easy-to-navigate river.
Fishing is possible at Porfyrdammen in both summer and winter. There is a shelter on a peninsula; weather and maintenance can affect its condition, so check before your visit. Before the snow arrives, Porfyrdammen is usually used for ice skating. This activity is seasonal and depends on the conditions.
Cycling and ice skating add to the range of activities. Älvdalen Cycling Club runs seasonal MTB activities for all ages, as well as group training sessions and courses. The varied MTB rides pass through valleys, along rivers and up into the mountains, where there are far-reaching views. The club can arrange an MTB bike rental; check availability in advance. Public skating is available at Älvdalen’s indoor ice rink from September to March. Check the current schedule before you travel.
When choosing accommodation in Älvdalen, it helps to first plan the experiences that are central to your trip: cultural sites, hiking trails, fishing or seasonal activities. This allows you to tailor your hotel search to your planned stay.
