Kyrkhult – Cultural History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kyrkhult
Kyrkhult can be explored through several clearly distinct facets: the history of the Tulseboda Brunn spa, church and architectural art, and trails between parks and lakes. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose your destination based on whether cultural sites, outdoor activities or a combination of the two is your priority. The destinations range from short walks to a designated hiking stage taking several hours.
Tulseboda Brunn: Spa History and Cultural Center
Tulseboda Brunn was once a popular spa resort and played a major role in the development of the Kyrkhult region. One building links this history to cultural use today: built in 1894, the restaurant building is now Tulseboda Kulturhus. Tulseboda Brunn serves as a cultural center with a circus school, exhibitions and an event venue. Operating details may change; if you are coming for a specific offering, it is best to check in advance.
Brunnspark is also part of this local landscape. Gravel paths run around the main building, alongside densely leafed trees. This gives the park its own character, distinct from the cultural center’s indoor spaces. Those exploring Kyrkhult’s history can thus discover the town’s former role as a spa resort and its present-day cultural activities in different locations.
Church, Art and Architectural History
Kyrkhult Church was consecrated in 1865. The large stone church has three naves, an arrangement that defines its architectural character. Inside is an altarpiece painted on site by Bengt Nordenberg in 1867. The artist was from the region. The cemetery is also home to Carl Eldh’s sculptures “Ansgar Blesses the North” and “After the Day’s Work.”
Another historic site is the Kyrkhult Local History Museum. It is housed in the former doctor’s villa, an outbuilding of Tulseboda Brunn built in 1889. The site complements the church art with a building associated with the former spa complex. If you are interested in architectural history, the church, doctor’s villa and former restaurant building offer different points of interest, rather than just a single attraction.
At Gårdssjön, Fornebodastugan is also home to a unique 19th-century elevated log structure. Alma Gauffin built the structure after falling in love with Gårdssjön. Its story links the building directly to the lake beside which it stands in Kyrkhult.
Trails and Water in Kyrkhult
For a shorter walk, consider the Kyrkhult exercise loop: it is 2.5 kilometers long, lies on the edge of town and is described as a very easy hiking trail. At 3.4 kilometers, the Fornebodaleden is longer and runs around Fornebodasjön in Kyrkhult. It starts at Strandparken in Tulseboda Brunnspark and connects the cultural heritage sites of Tulseboda Brunnspark and Forneboda Kulturbrunn. The two trails therefore differ in more than length: the exercise loop is explicitly rated as easy, while the lake and cultural sites serve as landmarks along the Fornebodaleden.
For a longer hike, the fourth stage of the Blekingeleden is described as running from Halens Camping to Tulseboda Brunnspark. It is 20.5 kilometers long and estimated to take 6–8 hours. Its endpoint is at Brunnspark in Kyrkhult. This makes it easy to distinguish the stage’s duration from that of the two shorter trails.
The illuminated Kyrkhult running and exercise trail starts at the Kyrkhult parking area and initially follows the western part of Södersjön. It passes Tulseboda Brunnspark and the Kyrkhult Local History Museum. Södersjön bathing area is in Kyrkhult, right next to Tulseboda Brunn and Brunnspark. Trails, cultural sites and the lake setting are thus different but concrete aspects of a stay.
