Aspön brings together cultural and natural attractions that can be given different priorities when planning your trip. Drottningskärs kastell and Aspö kyrka add historical highlights; the Museum för rörligt kustartilleri focuses on mobile coastal artillery. Along the coast, bathing spots vary in their shoreline, while forest and gravel paths offer opportunities for walking and cycling.

Getting there and getting around

The free Aspöleden car ferry connects Karlskrona and Aspö. The ferry route is 6,700 metres long, and the crossing takes 25 minutes. Aspö Havsbad can also be reached by car ferry from central Karlskrona. As ferry services may vary seasonally, check the current timetable for your trip. If you plan to visit the museum, you can plan the crossing and the route from the ferry terminal as separate parts of your journey.

A signposted forest path of about two kilometres leads from the ferry terminal to the Museum för rörligt kustartilleri. It is suitable for walking or cycling. Aspö’s gravel roads and paths are also suitable for cycling. This lets you distinguish in your plans between a specific route to the museum and the island’s more general cycling opportunities.

Landscape and bathing spots

Aspön’s varied landscape includes rocks for swimming, bays, forests and pastures. The bathing spots also differ in specific ways: Djupvik on Aspö has a gently sloping beach that is particularly suitable for small children. At Norre Strand, you can swim from the rocks. Aspö Havsbad has changing cabins; check before your visit whether they are currently available.

Fortress and coastal artillery

The well-preserved Drottningskärs kastell is a 17th-century fortress. Construction took place from 1680 to 1769. The four bastions, or projecting parts of the fortress, are named after Maria, Christina, Hedvig and Ulrica. The fortress is part of the Naval Port of Karlskrona World Heritage Site and is a visitor attraction with a restaurant.

The exhibitions at the Museum för rörligt kustartilleri show the various types of formations and units within the mobile coastal artillery. The Militärmuseet för Rörligt Kustartilleri has a unique collection of military equipment. In 2005, the collection was deemed so valuable that it could not be divided. The structure of the coastal artillery and its equipment are therefore presented as distinct museum topics.

Aspö kyrka

Aspö kyrka was built in the Neo-Gothic style and completed in 1891. The church’s construction history is also connected to the island: the stone for its foundation was quarried and dressed on Aspö. The buildings also belong to different periods: the fortress was built between 1680 and 1769, while Aspö kyrka was completed in 1891, placing fortress construction and Neo-Gothic church architecture in distinct eras.
