Suriname: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Suriname
Suriname brings together historic architecture, settlement history, and tropical nature. In Paramaribo, a preserved street plan and distinctive building techniques shape the cityscape. The remains of historic settlements and expansive protected areas offer further perspectives on the country. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes as different focuses for your travels.
Architectural history in Paramaribo’s cityscape
Paramaribo’s historic center preserves its original street plan. Its buildings illustrate the combination of Dutch architectural influences with traditional local techniques and materials. Exploring historic Paramaribo on foot or by bicycle lets you focus on both: the layout of the streets and the construction of individual buildings. This makes the city’s history tangible not only through individual buildings, but also through the interplay of the street plan and architecture.
Fort Zeelandia was built in 1667 on the site of the Indigenous village of Parmurbo. The Saints Peter & Paul Cathedral Basilica stands on Henck Arronstraat and was built on the site of a former Jewish theater. It is considered the largest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere. The two histories of construction highlight different aspects: for the fort, the former village site is part of its history; for the cathedral, these are its predecessor building and wooden architecture.
A colonial building became the Presidential Palace after Suriname gained independence in 1975. It faces Independence Square, with the Palm Garden behind it. These sites connect a historic building with its square and the garden behind it.
Settlement history at specific sites
Jodensavanne was founded in the 1680s. Its remains include the ruins of a synagogue, cemeteries, foundations of brick buildings, boat landing sites, and a military post. The synagogue is considered possibly the earliest synagogue of architectural significance in the Americas. The various remains give the site several historical dimensions: religious architecture, burial sites, building foundations, and a military presence.
Cassipora Creek Cemetery is a remnant of an older settlement founded in the 1650s. About three decades later, it was abandoned when its residents moved two kilometers downstream to Jodensavanne. The histories of the two settlements can thus be distinguished chronologically: Cassipora was founded first, followed by the residents’ move, while Jodensavanne was founded in the 1680s.
Forest areas and nature experiences
The Central Suriname Nature Reserve covers 1,592,000 hectares, mostly primary tropical forest. Its area is equivalent to around eleven percent of Suriname’s national territory. The protected area also includes the upper catchment of the Coppename River and the headwaters of other rivers. A catchment is the area from which water flows into a river; here, the focus is therefore on river basins and headwaters as well as the forest.
Peperpot Nature Park in the Commewijne District is a protected area covering more than 800 hectares. Its forest trails are suitable for hiking and wildlife observation. The nature experiences differ in focus: the Central Suriname Nature Reserve highlights its vast area, primary forest, and river basins, while Peperpot features forest trails and the activities mentioned there.
Cultural themes and visit planning
The Koto Museum is dedicated to Afro-Surinamese clothing and culture. The Lalla Rookh Museum celebrates the history of the Hindustani community. The museums therefore focus on different cultural themes. Check opening hours before visiting.
If you’re looking for hotels in Suriname, your trip’s focus can guide your planning: Paramaribo’s architecture and museums, the history of the settlements, or nature experiences such as hiking and wildlife observation. Consider which of these themes matters most to you, and choose a location that suits your specific plans.
