La Barraca d’Aigües Vives can be explored through its railway past, its routes and the monastic culture of the surrounding area. The former railway station and two distinct routes—the Camino Natural de l’Antic Trenet and the GR-236, the Route of the Monasteries—are particularly good places to see how these different themes come together. When planning your trip, you can choose between railway and hiking connections, cultural history and the valley landscape. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes provide a specific framework for deciding what you would like to experience during your trip.

Routes and the Former Railway Line

The Camino Natural de l’Antic Trenet runs along Carrer de l’Estació to the former La Barraca d’Aigües Vives railway station. From the station, it runs parallel to the GR-236, the Route of the Monasteries. A 5.7-kilometre section of the Camino Natural follows the route of the former railway line that connected Carcaixent and Dénia. This brings together two perspectives: the present-day route and the history of the railway connection. The GR-236 has a different focus, offering a route oriented around monastery destinations. The two routes therefore differ not only in name but also in their subject matter.

The Railway Station and Railway Heritage

The area around the former railway station has been turned into a park. The only surviving building at the station now serves as a sociocultural centre. A former railway signal box can also be seen nearby. Together, the park, the repurposed station building and the signal box reveal different traces of railway history in the area. The station is therefore not just a landmark on the Camino Natural, but also a place where the former use of the site can be distinguished from the current function of the surviving building.

Monasteries, Architectural History and Pilgrimage

The GR-236, known as the Route of the Monasteries, is associated with five destinations: La Murta in Alcira, Aguas Vivas in Carcaixent, Santa María de la Valldigna in Simat, Sant Jeroni de Cotalba in Alfauir and Corpus Christi in Llutxent. Near La Barraca d’Aigües Vives, in Carcaixent, stands the Real Monasterio de Santa María de Aguas Vivas. Its original origins date back to the 13th century. The present building was constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Valencian Gothic style; in 2007, the monastery was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. These details distinguish the monastery’s early origins from the period when the present building was constructed and its later heritage designation.

A pilgrimage held annually in mid-October is part of local tradition. It reenacts the discovery of the Virgin of Aguas Vivas by a farmer in 1250. The programme may vary; if you would like to include the pilgrimage in your trip, check the dates in advance.
