Genovés: Pilota Tradition, History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Genovés
Genovés brings together the history of pilota valenciana, historic buildings and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Genovés, you can decide whether you are more interested in the pilota tradition, local history or hiking. The sights and trail routes offer concrete points of reference to help you make that decision.
Pilota Valenciana and Local Culture
Genovés is considered the birthplace of pilota valenciana. The Museo de la Pilota opened in Genovés in 2003 and is dedicated to this tradition. The exhibits include different types of balls, protective equipment, photographs, playing clothes and models of different kinds of courts. The museum also has a Trinquet de pelota gorda, where this form of pilota valenciana can be played. Check current public access to this area before visiting.
Sculpture also takes up the theme: Genovés is home to sculptures dedicated to pilota valenciana. The bronze figure “El Saque” by Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench depicts a player. This means you can encounter the sporting tradition not only in the museum, but also in local art.
Local History, Buildings and Traditions
Genovés was an Arab alquería that belonged to Muslim Xàtiva; in 1762, the town became independent of Xàtiva. The Font de Sant Pasqual is a specific example of the town’s architectural history: the fountain was built in the Baroque style in 1777. Les Arcadetes del río Albaida, also known as Les Arcadetes de Alboi, formerly supplied Xàtiva with water. The municipality is working to restore historic sites in the town centre, including the Ermita del Cristo del Calvari.
A local tradition is the Bajada del Santísimo Cristo del Monte Calvario, celebrated annually in Genovés. The procession runs from the Ermita del Monte Calvario to the Virgen de los Dolores parish church, passing through Calvario, Sant Didac and Rosario streets. Participants include residents, people who live elsewhere but have a connection to Genovés, and visitors from the comarca. In August 2026, the Bajada was recognised as a Bien Inmaterial de Relevancia Local and added to the Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
The Senda Camí d’Alboi is an old path connecting Genovés with Alboi and the banks of the Albaida River. It follows the river and is used to reach the Cova Negra natural area from there. In Alboi, the Senda Andaluza starts at the Fuente de San Juan; it is one of Genovés’s four officially approved hiking trails.
Another trail leads from the banks of the Albaida, near the Xopà d’Alboi and the Casa de la Luz, to Peña Blanca. It follows the ridge of the Serra de la Solana to the Senda Andaluza and runs along the border with Benigànim. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Senda de la Ombría-Carbonera takes a different route across the highest part of the Serra de la Solana: it starts on the Camino Manzano, which is also followed by the Senda Andaluza, and ends at the narrow Portet de Lucia path, which connects to the Senda de la Peña Blanca.
Trails starting in the town centre are also described. One has little elevation gain and leads to a prominent peak in the municipal area, passing through a small pine forest on the northern slope of the Serra Grossa. The Xopà de Alboi is a small poplar grove with a recreational area and a scenic spot. The Ruta del Agua de la Costera reaches Genovés via the CV-610; its first waypoint is at the entrance to the town.
