Bolbaite is shaped by the River Sellent: it divides the town centre into two halves, connected by bridges.

River Landscape and Circular Route

A walk through the Paraje del Río Sellent takes you through the river landscape and offers the chance to enjoy the clear water. Where the Sellent flows out, a natural lake has formed and been developed as an inland bathing area. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between different ways to experience the river: a walk through the landscape or the area designed for swimming.

If you would like to plan a circular route, Bolbaite Agroforestal offers a specific option: the route is 8.48 kilometres long and takes approximately 55 minutes. These details come from a municipal tourism brochure published in 2019; check the route information locally before setting out. The distance and approximate duration provide two useful reference points for planning your time.

Relaxing by the River and near the Ermita

The riverside recreation area can be reached from the CV-580 via the second roundabout at the entrance to town. There is a car park at the entrance. The area is also accessible on foot from the historic town centre, as vehicle access is reserved for residents. This describes two different ways to get there: driving in from the road or walking from the old town centre. Before setting out, check local guidance on access and parking.

In the upper part of Bolbaite, there is a spacious recreation area with lovely views near the Ermita Santa Bárbara. There are picnic tables and a restaurant beside the ermita. If these facilities are important to your plans, check whether they are currently available before your visit.

Culture, Crafts and Local History

At the Castillo de Bolbaite, information panels explain the castle’s history and architectural features. The parish church of San Francisco de Paula houses a relic of the saint. Together, the castle and church offer different insights into the town’s cultural heritage: the Castillo focuses on history and architectural styles, while the church reflects devotion to the saint.

Bolbaite’s craft traditions include weaving with wicker and esparto grass, as well as making “caliqueños”, small cigars. These crafts complement the town’s architectural and religious heritage with a tradition of local production.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The festival in honour of the patron saint Santa Bárbara is celebrated on 4 December with a “Despertà”. Early in the morning, a band and traditional songs make their way through the streets; firecrackers are also set off. Pilgrimages travel to the Ermita Santa Bárbara and back. The date and the combination of music, song and pilgrimages give the festival a distinct place in local life.

The San Antón celebrations on the 15th, 16th and 17th include setting up the “luminaria” and blessing bread and animals in the Plaza de la Iglesia. Meat is then roasted over the embers, and peanuts and wine are offered to everyone. A municipal tourism brochure published in 2019 also described patron saint festivities in honour of San Francisco de Paula, held in spring, during the second week of Easter. It also portrays the Moros y Cristianos as bringing a colourful festive atmosphere to the streets of Bolbaite.
