Moncófar combines a six-kilometre coastline with natural areas, historic buildings and its own travel traditions. The beaches vary in their features and length; there is also the Sendero Azul del Belcaire coastal walking trail and places where agriculture, fishing and history are in evidence. This variety gives you practical points to consider when weighing up your interests for your stay and looking for hotels in Moncófar.

Beaches and Coastal Paths

The coastline includes the beaches of Pedraroja, Grau, Masbo, Belcaire, Beniesma and Estanyol. Three stated lengths make for a useful comparison: Playa del Belcaire is 500 metres long, Playa Pedraroja is 550 metres and l’Estanyol is 900 metres. Playa del Belcaire is a dog-friendly beach in a dune landscape and extends to the mouth of the Belcaire. This area also includes a nature interpretation centre; check local information about facilities before your visit.

Playa Pedraroja has an access point with reduced barriers, lifeguard and rescue services, and sports courts. As information about these services may change seasonally, it is advisable to check before travelling. Playa Beniesma has a naturist section. These different beach features can help you focus on the stretches of coastline that interest you, without treating the beaches as if they were all alike.

The Sendero Azul del Belcaire is a four-kilometre coastal walking trail. In 2017, it received the European Blue Trail award in recognition of its ecological value. If you plan to walk the trail, check for notices about temporary works before setting out.

Estuary and Protected Habitats

An estuary with native vegetation forms at the mouth of the Belcaire. There are opportunities for birdwatching and picnic areas; it is also a protected habitat for the European pond turtle. Nature observation and habitat conservation go hand in hand here, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

l’Estanyol also brings together beach and nature conservation: it is home to a flora micro-reserve and a protected habitat for the endangered Kentish plover. The Estanyol micro-reserve covers 1.3 hectares. It is home to native and endemic plants, as well as a designated habitat for the Kentish plover. The coast therefore offers a range of nature-related features side by side: the estuary at the Belcaire and the protected habitat at Estanyol.

Culture, History and Water Heritage

The Museo de Historia y Etnología de Moncofa explores the town’s agricultural, fishing and traditional way of life. Objects, tools and images from everyday life bring these themes to life. Guided tours and activities for school groups are available on request.

The Ermita de la Magdalena is located in the Grao, Moncofa’s maritime quarter. The 18th-century religious building reflects a strong maritime faith and was built over an Arab rábita. Remains of a historic 16th-century watchtower have also been preserved at Playa Beniesma. Alongside their natural features, these places give the coast a historical dimension.

An extensive network of irrigation channels and wells bears witness to the area’s historic water heritage and is connected to local agriculture. The EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean Route is also relevant when planning a cycling trip: it passes through Moncofa. The third stage in the Comunitat Valenciana covers 55 kilometres from Castelló to Sagunt. Check current route conditions and signage before setting off.

Rice Dishes and September Events

Local cuisine brings together seafood and produce from the vegetable gardens in rice dishes. These include paella valenciana, arroz a banda, seafood paella and baked rice. In September, the Jornades Gastronòmiques de l’Arròs i la Paella showcases local rice dishes prepared in a variety of ways. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the dates for the year before travelling.
