Herbeset: Hiking Trails and Mountain Landscape
Accommodation in Herbeset
Herbeset lies at the entrance to Tinença de Benifassà Natural Park, in a mountainous natural landscape, and belongs to the municipality of Morella. Herbeset is considered the oldest hamlet in the municipality of Morella. The village brings together hiking trails, a compact village layout and a local festival tradition. Herbeset has no permanent residents; some houses have been restored as summer residences. Several specific perspectives can help you plan your trip: trails with published route details, the hamlet’s architecture and a festival centered on traditional pastries. This lets you decide which of these aspects matters most for your stay.
Hiking Trails Around Herbeset
The GR 331 Els Ports – Camà de Conquesta is a 166-kilometer circular hiking trail with 15 stages and includes Herbeset. On the ninth stage, the route runs from Morella to Herbeset; the estimated walking time for the 12.2 kilometers is 3 hours and 3 minutes. Distinguishing between the entire circular trail and this individual stage is useful for planning: the figures for the ninth stage refer to the Morella–Herbeset section, not the entire GR 331.
The linear PR-CV 373 Pereroles–Herbeset is 7 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of 2 hours and 22 minutes. Compared with the ninth stage of the GR 331, both the distance and estimated time are shorter. The trail passes through a pine forest to the Barranc d’Herbeset and then continues to the path by the cemetery and viewpoints overlooking Herbeset.
The PR-CV 215 passes through pine forests, ravines and sections with dry-stone walls before reaching the entrance to Herbeset. By comparison, the PR-CV 373 names the Barranc d’Herbeset, the path by the cemetery and viewpoints overlooking the hamlet. This means you can choose based not only on the published route details but also on the landscape features described. Check the current condition of your chosen route before setting out; conditions on the PR-CV 373 may vary seasonally.
Village Layout and Local Tradition
From the access road, Herbeset appears as a small cluster of closely packed houses. The Church of San Miguel stands at the highest point of the hamlet. The Church of Sant Miquel is known for its Romanesque portal. The cemetery is also one of Herbeset’s sights. The cluster of houses, church and cemetery give the hamlet a distinctive appearance alongside the mountainous landscape and hiking trails.
The San Isidro festival is part of Morella’s Rollos y Primas cycle. Traditional pastries take center stage, and the CofradĂa de Herbeset distributes traditional rollos. Inclusive participation in the meal was also taken into account at a second consecutive edition. Alongside its landscape and architectural features, local festival traditions are therefore also part of Herbeset’s character.
