Almenara brings together mountains, Marjal wetlands, lagoons and Mediterranean beaches. If you’re looking for a hotel in Almenara, you can first consider whether you’d prefer to focus on coastal scenery and natural areas, historic buildings or guided tours during your stay. These different themes offer practical starting points for planning.

Coast, lagoons and protected species

The Platja d’Almenara flora micro-reserve covers 5.39 hectares and takes in approximately the southern half of Playa de Almenara. It was established to protect Otanthus maritimus and Silene cambessedesii. The coast is therefore not just part of the landscape, but also a place where the protection of specific plants plays a role.

Nesting by Charadrius alexandrinus has also been confirmed at Playa de Almenara. The species is classified as endangered on the Valencian list of threatened animal species and is under special protection. Along with the wetlands and lagoons, this aspect of nature conservation is one of the defining themes of Almenara.

Trails and landscape features

The trails vary in length and layout. The Ruta dels Estanys is a 1.5-kilometre circular route of low difficulty through the dels Estanys nature area. The ascent to Castillo de Almenara is an approximately four-kilometre circular route that reaches the summit in under two hours. The Ruta Verda is five kilometres long and runs through the municipality’s cultivated fields; it can also be completed by bicycle. For a general comparison, you can choose between a short loop, an ascent with a stated duration and a longer route through fields. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Individual landscape features also give the area its own character. Penya de l’Estany is a 29-metre-high hill with panoramic views of the three lagoons. L’Ullal refers to an opening where underground water from the Sierra de Espadán emerges. These features add different nature-related themes to the trails, without being tied to any particular route.

Fortress, walls and local history

Castillo de Almenara is a Muslim fortress from the 10th century, built on the remains of Roman structures. It is flanked by the towers L'AgĂĽelet and L'AgĂĽeleta. The route to the summit connects the landscape with this historic building; the circular route described is approximately four kilometres long and leads uphill in under two hours.

Almenara’s walls also tell of a later period of construction: six towers were originally built in the second half of the 16th century. Two have survived, as have restored sections of the wall that surrounded the former settlement. The fortress and the town walls can therefore be seen as distinct parts of the local heritage.

The Iglesia Parroquial de los Santos Juanes was built between 1721 and 1728 on the remains of the former local sanctuary, which dated from 1528. Since 2007, the church has been classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local. The sequence of the earlier sanctuary and the later church building makes the town’s architectural history tangible through a specific example.

Rice processing at the Molí d’Arròs

The history of the Molí d’Arròs began in 1753 as a straw store supplying the troops stationed in Almenara. In 1914, the building was granted permission to install machinery for rice production; this led to the rice mill known today. The museum collection displays machinery used in rice production. The site thus traces a shift from military supply to later industrial use.

Guided tours at the Museo del Molí d’arròs explain the traditional rice-processing process, from the rice’s arrival to its packaging. Tours are listed as available until 19 December 2026. If you’re planning a later visit, please check whether tours are available.

Planning tours and festivals

Tours of the Conjunt Memorial de Darrere del Castell provide information about the conflict and Almenara’s historical heritage. Guided tours of various defensive structures in the Almenara area are offered one weekend per month. As the specific date matters for planning, check it in advance for your travel period.

The Fiestas patronales de Almenara include processions through the town’s streets. Celebrated annually at the end of September, the festival is dedicated to the Santísima Virgen del Buen Suceso and San Roque. If you’d like to plan your stay around this time, check the dates for the relevant year.
