San Fulgencio: Archaeology, Huertas and Las Veredas
Accommodation in San Fulgencio
San Fulgencio offers a range of ways to plan your stay: Iberian archaeological sites and museum finds, an 18th-century church, cultivated huertas and the Las Veredas circular cycling route. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on cultural history, landscape or a specific cycling route.
Iberian Archaeological Sites and Museum
La Escuera is located in the municipality of San Fulgencio, in the province of Alicante, on a slope of the Barranco de Las Cueras. The archaeological site belongs to the fully developed Iberian period and dates from the late 5th to the 2nd century BC. A building excavated there was interpreted by Solveig Nordström in the 1960s as an Iberian temple. The temple designation is an interpretation of the building.
El Oral also offers a glimpse into the area's Iberian past. The settlement was inhabited between the 6th and 5th centuries BC. It received Etruscan products and objects directly associated with wine, and took part in trade networks in the southern part of what is now the province of Alicante. The information about El Oral thus provides both a timeframe and insight into the contacts and goods of the period.
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de San Fulgencio displays finds from La Escuera, El Oral and the El Molar necropolis. They date from between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The collection therefore brings together finds from several of the archaeological sites mentioned and spans a period beyond the settlement phases described for each one. The museum also has an educational room for school groups.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Fulgencio, dating from the 18th century, is also part of the area's cultural and historical heritage. Together with the museum and archaeological sites, it offers another historical point of interest, although these sites do not all belong to the same period: the church is considerably more recent than the Iberian settlements and finds.
Huertas, Nature and Las Veredas
San Fulgencio is surrounded by cultivated huertas. Protected bird and plant species unique to the region can be found around the Hondico de Amorós. Alongside the archaeological sites, the area's agricultural landscape and nature are also worth exploring.
One specific way to experience the area by bike is the Las Veredas circular cycling route, which passes through San Fulgencio. It is described as an easy 26-kilometre route that can be completed in under two hours. Its highlighted attractions include Hondico de Amorós in San Fulgencio and the El Oasis nature area. Route details may be updated by the operator, so check the information before setting out.
The route and its length offer a different point of reference from the archaeological sites and museum: here, the focus is on a circular cycling route with specific distance information. If you are interested in the landscape, the huertas and the protected species around Hondico de Amorós are other features that make San Fulgencio distinctive.
Local Cuisine and Trip Planning
Visitors can try traditional San Fulgencio dishes in the town's restaurants and bars. The local cuisine also has a particular focus on fruit and vegetables, reflecting the municipality's traditional agricultural character. The food therefore complements the landscape, while the museum, archaeological sites and church appeal to other interests.
When choosing where to stay in San Fulgencio, you can distinguish between its different attractions: the archaeological sites, museum and church offer cultural history; Las Veredas is a described cycling route; and the huertas and traditional dishes reflect the area's agricultural character. If you are looking for a hotel, these differences can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
