Lo Pagán: Beach, Nature and Fishing Culture
Accommodation in Lo Pagán
Lo Pagán appeals to travelers who want to combine beach activities, mud therapy, fishing culture and nature experiences. When planning your trip, it is worth considering what each place has to offer: the beach sections have different access routes, while the fish market, festival traditions and regional park bring other aspects of the trip into focus.
Beaches and Access Routes
You can reach Playa de La Mota via Avenida del Puerto or by walking from Molino de Quintín. By road, take exit 774 from the AP-7 or use the N-332. For Playa de Villananitos, the road access is also via exit 774 from the AP-7 or via the N-332 from Cartagena to San Pedro del Pinatar. On foot or by bicycle, you can get there along a promenade that runs the length of the beach.
To reach Playa de La Puntica in Lo Pagán, take the N-322 from Cartagena to San Pedro del Pinatar, then the road from San Pedro to Lo Pagán via Explanada. The information for the three sections therefore differs in the specific access routes mentioned: at Villananitos, the promenade along the entire beach is a useful landmark; at La Mota, it is the footpath from Molino de Quintín; and at La Puntica, it is the route via Explanada.
Mud Baths and Water Activities
At Las Charcas, next to Molino de Quintín in Lo Pagán, the mud baths offer a freely accessible open-air area for mud therapy. Visits are free. Check the access conditions before your trip. This makes it easy to distinguish this activity from those at Playa de La Mota, where visitors can enjoy water sports, kayaking and swimming in open water. The two locations therefore offer different ways to spend time by or in the water.
Fish Auction and Routes to Explanada
The Lo Pagán fish market, Lonja de Pescado de Lo Pagán, is located on Explanada de Lo Pagán, next to Club Náutico de Lo Pagán. Visitors can watch the auction of freshly caught fish there. Free guided tours of the fish market last 75 minutes and are scheduled to run until December 2026. If you plan to visit after that period, check whether the tours are still available.
The Sendero Azul “De lo Urbano a lo Natural” trail also leads to Explanada, where the fish market is located. The trail and the fish market therefore share a destination, although the trail does not pass through the market. Club Náutico de Lo Pagán hosts sporting and fishing activities; the fish market complements this connection to fishing with an auction that visitors can watch.
Fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen
The Fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen are celebrated every year on July 16 in San Pedro del Pinatar. The program includes a land pilgrimage and a procession on the Mar Menor. During the festivities, the image is carried to the church of Ntra. Sra. del Carmen in Lo Pagán, where it remains throughout the day. Since 1965, the fiestas have been recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest.
If your trip falls on July 16, the image’s stay in Lo Pagán is a distinct part of the festival; the land pilgrimage and procession on the Mar Menor are part of the program in San Pedro del Pinatar. Check the dates in the festival program for the year of your visit.
Nature Around Lo Pagán
The Parque Regional Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro, located near Lo Pagán, covers 856 hectares and includes six kilometers of Mediterranean coastline. This wetland is important for the breeding and resting of numerous bird species. Three signposted routes run through the regional park; its visitor facilities include birdwatching points, information boards and two recreation areas.
At the Las Salinas visitor center, you can find out what there is to see in the protected natural area and how to get there. Guided tours of the regional park are also offered there to the general public. This makes it easy to include nature around Lo Pagán as a distinct focus in your travel plans, alongside the beach and fishing culture.
