Discover Biar: Culture, History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Biar
During your stay in Biar, you can focus on its cultural history, local craft traditions, festivals or hikes. The routes and walks also vary in duration: options include guided cultural walks, urban routes and hikes lasting several hours. When planning your hotel stay, consider whether architectural history and museums, a particular event date or time outdoors matter most to you.
Culture and Architectural History
The Castillo de Biar dates back to the 12th century; an Almohad vault from the same period has also been preserved. Its musealization, which opened in 2024, features four thematic areas, information panels, explanatory models and a viewing walkway. The Museo Etnográfico Municipal Miguel Maestre Castelló is dedicated to Biar’s cultural heritage, traditions and crafts. A particular focus is on pottery and the production of glazed ceramics. The collection contains more than 1,000 objects and items; some are on display, while others are held in storage.
The religious buildings also reflect different architectural periods. The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción combines an original Renaissance building phase from the 15th and 16th centuries with Baroque additions from the late 17th century. The Santuario de Biar has three naves; the central nave features cross-ribbed vaults decorated with stucco and frescoes. The Arco de Jesús, a stone arch dating from the 13th century, is part of the Ruta de los Arcos. The Acueducto Medieval dates from 1490 and has three arches: two pointed arches and one flattened round arch. It can be visited on a hiking route through the natural landscape around Biar.
Walks and Hiking Trails
Guided cultural walks through Biar’s old town are offered on Sundays. They lead to small hermitages and a snow well. Reservations are required to take part; participation is free, and a minimum group size applies. If you plan to join one of these walks, check the reservation requirements and minimum group size for your chosen date.
There are two different duration estimates for the Ruta de las Ermitas: the urban section is listed as a 40-minute walk and leads to the hermitages of San Ramón, San Roque and Loreto. The full Ruta de las Ermitas is listed as a two-and-a-half-hour hike. This allows you to compare the time required for the two options without assuming that the shorter estimate applies to the entire route.
The Ruta de las Fuentes is an urban route visiting 15 fountains. It covers approximately four to five kilometres through Biar’s old town and its surroundings. Allowing about five minutes at each fountain, the total time is two hours. The information therefore combines the walk, the approximate distance and a specific time estimate, offering a different way to plan your visit than the routes to the hermitages.
For a longer hike, the PRV-155 Sierra del Frare is a clearly described option: this circular trail in Biar is 13.8 kilometres long, has a listed duration of three hours and 40 minutes, and is rated moderate. Biar’s mountain areas offer opportunities for outdoor sports, landscape viewing and hikes accessible from the town, in a predominantly wooded setting. Reconco de Biar is designated a micro-reserve and is home to numerous plant species native to the Mediterranean landscape. Fontanella, Reconco and Penya Tallà are also popular with day-trippers and are easy to reach from the town centre.
Festivals and When to Visit
The Moros y Cristianos festival takes place every year in May. The programme includes music, arquebus fire, and parades by brass bands and comparsas. The Medio Año Festero is scheduled for the first weekend in November and includes communal dinners and social activities. The dances known as “Balls de Jesús” or “Volteta de la Reina” take place in January; since their revival in 2017, they have been a public, participatory event.
May, the first weekend in November and January therefore offer different dates to plan a stay around. If you want your trip to coincide with a festival, check the exact dates before making your plans.
